: removal of igntion from upper triple tree
looking for some quick directions or a pic of what im supposed to do.....i need to remover the ignition from the stock triple tree and then put my new triple tree on with the ignition.......How do i do this without destroying this stuff........
mickr1 03-01-2007, 01:34 PM The ignition switch is held on with shear bolts. If you are careful you can undo them by tapping them round with a hammer and a small chisel. You will need to buy new shear bolts for when you reinstall the switch.
Good luck :thumbup

alright im gunna give it a try 2 morrow,What does a shear bolt look like? anything special? is that the only way you can take them out?
marcaztls 03-02-2007, 12:49 AM You don't have to replace the bolts with shear bolts, they're only an anti-theft device that anyone can get round with five minutes work. Normal socket cap or allen bolts will work just fine.
I use a centre punch and as mickr1 said, just punch them round. Tap vertically down to seat the punch then angle the punch at 45* and tap in the direction it will undo. It's not hard and perfectly possible :)
The other harder way but as a last resort is to drill the bolt heads off, remove the ignition then the remainder of the bolt will just turn out.

Totally correct. The shear bolts suck. PITA... marcaztls is spot on :thumbup
update guys....i drilled right through those suckers, since i wasnt trying to keep the stock triple tree i drilled right through it and through the shear bolt..took about 10 minutes...:rock
roostnureye 07-20-2007, 04:41 PM good luch tryin to remove the bolts with a punch! ha i tried for an hour or so, then i got out the dremel tool put on a diamond cutting wheel cut the shear bolt into a square head and got some vice grips and removed it that way. i dont see how u could remove them with a punch or chisel, the bolt has to come up, if u are chiseling or punching u are using a downward force to remove a bolt that needs to go up. make any sense?
almighty drill...!!! works wonders...!!!
YamahaRyder 08-06-2007, 07:44 PM I tried using a dremel tool to "notch" the bolts holding the ignition to the triple tree, but was not successful getting the bolts out.
Instead I had to drill the bolts out and then use pliers to remove the rest of the bolt. When I reinstall the ignition I will have to either create new threads with a tapping tool or used a slightly larger bolt. Either way it's a lot of work to remove the ignition and I would not have done it accept that I have lost all the keys to my bike and need to take the ignition cyclinder to a locksmith to have new keys made.
roostnureye 08-08-2007, 02:24 PM how did u end up messing the threads up inside the triple tree? when u notch the bolts, u cut the head of the bolt so u can get a pair of visegrips on it, then turn it just like an ordinary bolt righty tighty, u know the rest. anyway u can get an ez out or just get a tap and die set for the next size up, and lowes or home cheepo carries the hardware.
408gmoney 10-04-2007, 10:03 PM I drilled them out and it took about 20min. Start with a small drill bit to make a guide hole them move up to a bigger one just a little bit bigger than the bolt it's self.
Good luck

I agree, on the face of it it doesn't make much sense. However, most of these bolts are Loctite'd in and the initial downward punches to seat the punch also helps to break the seal. After you tilt the punch you aren't so much punching down but around. It's similar but not as great a force when you use a ratchet and have to push down heavily to keep the socket seated on a regular bolt.
All I can say is working on bikes professionally for 13 years now, I've removed more than a few ignition locks using this method and all but two or three have worked that way. It's just one method though, agreed there are plenty :thumbup
