I own a 99' R1 all stock except for an Ackropovic slip on. The lady at Ivan's said I needed the jet kit. After I recieved the kit his instructions says to use the stock jets (130). I called Ivan and he said to just use the needles in the kit, not the jets. My question is will just changing the needles with the stock jets make any difference? Am I wasting money?

I have not fitted Ivan's kit myself but I believe that Ivan's needles are designed for 130 main jets. I was under the impresion that the jets supplied with the kit are pilot jets as EU models had different pilot jets to USA models.

The directions refer to the main jets. Stock is 130, Ivan's kit has 132.5. Like I said he sais just to use the needels. Nothing mentioned about pilot jets in the instructions. If you want I can try to email ou a copy of the directions, just PM me with your email.

Apparently he is big on customer service and happy to speak on the phone If you are in the US the 15 pilot jets are fine, but in the UK they are 20 and need to be changed to 15.

Hopefully I can help you out, I'm in the process of jetting my carbs and I have spoken to Ivan a couple of times now. Since all you have is a slip-on, you're to retain the stock 130 main jets, back out your screws 3.5 to 4 turns, and use a stock air filter with a stock airbox. The needles themselves are what will allow your bike to gain some power. Ivan's proprietary design of the needles improves fueling over stock, not to mention the ability to adjust the needle height if necessary. So with just the needles and adjustment to the mixture screws, you're sure to gain some noticeable power.

All you need are the needles with your set up, and they will make a noticable difference in the way the bike runs. Main jet size is not everything, because you can change the amount of fuel you get at WOT by changing the root diameter of the needle. Thats neither here nor there though, your bike is going to run great with his kit. The 5 or so R1 kits of his I have installed have all made my customers happy.

On a '98 '99 you can't have the pilot screws 3.5 - 4 turns out or they will fall out. Stock is 2.5 (in UK) any more than 3 and a bit and they fall out. Changed for the '00 model. Sorry quick post - laptop battery running out.

This applies to U.S. models also? Apologies :chair: , You are right - US models '98 -'01 = 3 1/8 turns out. It is only European '98 - '99 that are 2 1/2 turns out.
