This a different version of the HONEST REVIEW, because this one isn't plug and play. This one requires a little custom TLC in order to make!
Let me explain.......
I was reading a thread on this forum where No_6 was asking GREGG of www.greggscustoms.com ( the guy who makes the best flushmount blinkers available for the R1) if he had considered wiring up some LED bulbs to put in the running lights (eyeball lights) on the 02-03 R1.
A light bulb POPPED over my head... How about buying the bulbs from Gregg and wiring them into my Lockhart Phillips Short Stalk III's that I have on the rear of my bike?
So I emailed him and waaaalllaah !!! A couple days later here I am with bulbs ready to install !
By purchasing the bulbs this allows me to have a matching set of blinkers, front and rear. Gregg's LED Bulbs are MUCH brighter than the bulbs that come with the LP Short Stalk III's. Which to me translates to a SAFER turn signal. And again, this is a custom MOD! My bike is now a little MORE different than the average R1 !
Let me discuss 2 downfalls of these bulbs.
(1) Length of wires: The wires that he sent to me were about half the length they needed to be. This is a SUPER EASY fix that I am certain GREGG will remedy if other forum members choose to purchase bulbs. So Gregg if your paying attention lengthen the wires to about 10 inches !
(2) Flasher Relay issues: If you don't mind the "FAST FLASH" rate then this issue doesn't pertain to you. When installing any LED's with the Yamaha stock flasher relay the blinkers will blink fast. You can have your fronts and rears hooked up and they will blink at a faster rate using the Yamaha stock flasher relay. Now, I had a EL-12 flasher relay that slowed down the flash rate when I had just the front LED Flushmount blinkers installed, but once I hooked up the REAR bulbs it would only light the bulbs up and they wouldn't flash at all. So what am I saying? A EL-12 Flasher relay will not work with front and rear LED blinkers installed. How did I fix this? I put the Yamaha stock flasher relay back in. So if you are a electrical guru and know what flasher relay to get let me know and I will purchase and try it out. Again, all 4 blinkers will work if you use the STOCK relay BUT they will flash at a FASTER rate! So, basically... I am still working on trying to get the flash rate to work at the normal speed. I will keep everyone updated if I get it solved !
Now, for my opinion: I love the bulbs. I love the fact that I did something custom to my bike even though it is very minor. I love the fact that these bulbs are BRIGHTER than the normal filament bulbs which makes my bike a lot easier to see. Once I find out exactly what flasher relay will make the blinkers work at normal speed.... well.... then I will be even happier. For guys who don't mind the flasher speed then there is no complaints for you ! These bulbs are great !
Where to get them: Email Gregg at gregg@greggscustoms.com
Now for the pictures !!
Here is a picture with the BULBS LIT !!!
Here's a picture of how the install works and what to use!
The "glue" is : GE Silicone II. Clear. 100% silicone.
Post any comments or questions and I'll make sure to get back to you ASAP !!
In the mean time, I'm looking forward to hearing from Gregg about his "eyeball" or running light bulbs. I have integrated mine into blinkers also so I am looking forward to wiring some LED's up to those lights too !
Also, what do you guys think of this MOD?
`bertr1` 11-20-2002, 06:50 PM are they really really bright or just bright
YZF-R1 Maniac 11-20-2002, 06:54 PM TS02R1, Have you thought about trying liberteks flasher relay?? It is adjustable from 1-6 flashes per second? Just an idea.
Hope it helps.
They look cool those new bulbs.
Cheers:beer
It's hard to classify... However, I would say this.
They put a regular filament bulbs to shame! Meaning, they are MUCH brighter than a regular filament bulb!
You want me to take a picture of my bike outside at night with my 4 way flashers going? (4 way flashers are thanks to my Chatterbox HJC 2002 Alarm system)
:)

I'll look into that ! I'm going to size up all my options before I start purchasing different things ! But you definitely might be on to something !
Thanks !

That way it wouldnt matter if you changed the indicators again as then you just adjust the flasher relay.
Cheers:beer
Here's a picture of the rear blinkers at night! Just pulled it out of my garage and took a shot ! Hope this helps to describe the "brightness" of the bulbs!
Jboat 11-20-2002, 07:41 PM Damn, that shit is bright. It even blinded me on my monitor. I like the idea and it looks good!:thumbup
NY2NJ 11-20-2002, 09:15 PM Those are pretty damn bright. They make the fronts look like they're barely on. I second the Libertek flasher relay. My EL-12 was useless once I went all-LED with my signals. Thanks for the review. This is pretty good alternative for a friend of mine who doesn't want to shell out for an undertail. What is the cost?
Dave P 11-20-2002, 11:47 PM Yes that is soooo sweet. Why didn't I think of that. I like it a lot. I have Greggs blinkers in the front and stalks in the back. I will do that soon as I can get them from Gregg. Thanks . R 1 Forum guys are the best.:rock :rock
rotaryphone 11-21-2002, 12:18 AM It seems lot brighter because of the housing. I also got gregg's front blinker and also want to shove one in the light housing. Can I just take + and - from LEDs from corner marker and tap into + and - on the side blinker?
tidbit 11-21-2002, 12:24 AM hrm.. I think it's time to order from greg.. :D.. TS02R1.. Where did you get your chatterbox alarm.. and for how much?.. I'm looking for an alarm upgrade :fact
tidbit 11-21-2002, 12:30 AM oh btw.. the reason why the lights are flashing is because there isn't enough of a power drain because you are using LED's... (led's use less power).. try splicing the stock bulbs.. back in.. Hide them somewhere on your bike.. where no one will see em.. (in trunk or hidden within the undertail.
your LED's will still work.. because they require hardly any power to run. and your blinkers will so back to normal speed..
Hope it works.. if not.. shoot me. :finger
erixR1 11-21-2002, 01:53 AM I am playing with bulbs right now for the running lights. The downside to running the one greg has is you have to mod the headlight or come up with a patch of some kind.
I have found a few LED replacement wedge bulbs that are readily available from autoparts stores. APC has some 10mm single LED bulbs that sell for 7.99 / pair but are too dim(IMO) as they appear to dim. Jamstrait has some that are a set of 4 5mm LEDs on the wedge mount but I have not plugged those in to see since I am waiting on my Lockhart bulbs.
The lockhart bulbs don't look like 194's based on the Flush mount V I looked at. I think they are amber 921's around 18W even though they claim 20-23. I tried amber 916's (8W ) but didnt see all that much of a difference. The only thing is they are a bit largerand will have to check clearance to make sure they dont melt anything. VPREATR has these so can maybe answer the clearance.
I talked to LEDtronics and they do make a 6 LED wedge bulb, but at $18 each, I am going to try the lockharts bulb and the 4 LED wedge before doing that. Hopefully they get here before this weekend.
On the flasher, you could run a resister inline to make the flasher work. You may reduce light a smidge, but you dont have to order the Libertek deal.

natas 11-21-2002, 07:58 AM i just sent gregg an email asking about ordering some of those bulbs to put in my short stalks. how much is he charging for a pair? the idea of leaving the lp bulbs and hiding them somewhere sounds like the easiest and cheapest. i would hate to have buy another relay.
R1pilot 11-21-2002, 08:30 AM Those look great, how much does he want for a pair of bulbs?:boobies
Sorry about the slow response guys !!! You can purchase bulbs from Gregg for:
$40.00 shipped !!!
Remember these are LED bulbs and will last FOREVER compared to filament bulbs!
Go to www.greggscustoms.com to order !!!
Hope this information helps !!!

I got my ChatterBox HJC 2002 Alarm system from Greg at www.ema-usa.com **A PROUD R1-FORUM SPONSOR**
Go to there website and Email Greg and tell him your a R1-Forum member and ask him how much a Chatterbox HJC 2002 alarm system would cost shipped to your door. (don't forget to tell him what state you live in) He'll email you back and give you a price quote! It might be better than what his website lists.. you never know !!
But for what it's worth the EMA website lists the alarm at $59.95 plus shipping.
Also, if you have a 2002 R1 and you want to install this alarm on that bike I posted wiring instructions on the forum before! You can see the review by clicking the link below !!

Jims2000R-1 11-22-2002, 12:37 AM TS02R1 : Great review as always........:fact
I have seen the Libertek blinkers and they are really nice - bright as hell.
Tidbit: I had a chatterbox alarm and I did not like it at all...... the first one did not work and I called the manufacturer and they could not help me. I took it back and got a second one and it did not work ....... Got really pissed, called the company agian and they said they would call me back ------- nothing (bastards). I sent them an email and expressed my dissatisfaction with their product - no return email. I bought a Gorilla alarm and installed it in the parking lot of the company I bought it from ......... it works awesome and no blinking LED. I did not want a blinking LED ..... I don't want a potential theif to see the LED and know that he must disalarm my bike before he has his way with it :2bitchsla .
Just another opinion. Good luck.
R1pilot 11-22-2002, 07:22 AM Thanks for the info.:yesnod

tidbit 11-22-2002, 11:50 PM Todd,
When my scorpio alarm arrives... Want to help meh install it? ;) . Bleh once again I'll have to take a stab at working with my electrical system..
Wish me luck! :beer
tidbit 11-22-2002, 11:53 PM only downside to the chatterbox.. is the no "tilt".. IMHO tilt is #1
I was just re-reading this post and figured I would update everyone on the flasher relay issue.
I am currently running 6 blinkers, all from Gregg's Customs. When I originally installed all of them the wouldn't flash.
I bought the Libertek Flasher relay and it fixed my whole flasher relay issue.
If you are having problems with your flash rate for your blinkers I HIGHLY suggest purchasing a LIBERTEK flasher relay from either www.tobefast.com or www.libertek.com.
This relay will fix any and all flash rate issues that you might be having with your blinkers.
Hope this helps.
R1Jim 02-26-2003, 07:55 AM few comments....putting a resistor in series will actually reduce the current and make the relay more likely to flash fast/er. I like the idea of putting another bulb in parallel and hiding it, but a low value resistor could do this instead and not have the hassles of blowing/lighting up. Any mechanical relay is likely to have problems, but I am sure that a lot of cars use electric ones these days that are unaffected by load (probably like the one someone suggested), local autopart store or car breaker should be able to sort you out for a few quid/dollars

I experimented with running another bulb inline in order to make it stop blinking fast. It will work, however, try completely hiding a blinking light. You'll see it coming out of the body work. I tried for a while and couldn't completely hide it. Also, think about the headache that you'll have if all of a sudden one of your hidden bulbs stops working and your flash rate speeds up again. Not to mention that it's a pretty "cheap" way of fixing this issue and IMO made me feel like I was downgrading the quality of my bike by rigging such a system.
r8ders 02-26-2003, 04:54 PM Another way you can slow the flash rate of your blinkers is by wiring an 8ohm, 20W to 25W, non-inductive wirewound resistor in series at each location you are running the LED's. These are available at RadioShack as part number 271-120 at a cost of $1.99 each and are about 1 3/4" x 3/8" inch in size.
What I mean by "in series" is one end of the resistor attaches to the positive and the other end to the negative wire of your LED. The resistor puts a load to the flasher making it think there is still a regular light bulb installed in that location. This worked great on my friend's gixxer and R6.
Thanks

You are better off wiring in the libertek adjustable flasher relay. Resisters get hot and have been known to burn/melt fairings and wiring. I tried this approach ( the cheap approach ) on my last bike and almost paid big time.
I'm currently running a Libertek flasher relay. A bit pricey, but worth fixing the flasher rate issue.
The Libertek flasher relay seems to be the only reasonable fix for "fast" blinker rates..
A_Fire_Inside 04-10-2003, 07:20 PM are those LED's in your bar-ends???
