i just got a 99 r1 i love it. this is the most powerful bike ive owned so far. at stop lights the bike overheats. way past 250 degrees. if i move the temperature stays below 200 the fan comes on at 220 but it comes on at a low speed does the fan turn on at a higher speed also? there are 2 relays for the fan. I need an outside opionion before i change both temp sensors and relays

I have just bought a 99 R1 last fall and don't have alot of experience with it . I had the same concern but according to the manual the fan doesn't come on till around 240, just seems like it is a hot running engine. On mine the temp drops readily once I start moving. There is also temp warning idiot lights.

Your temp should not exceed about 225 degrees. My 01's fan comes on at 220 and I've never seen it above 225.

Today I did another Test! at 240 the fan came on at 243 the idiot temperature red warning light came on i tested the fluid its perfect the fan comes on im guessing either the thermostat is bad or the water pump isnt working right or maybe i should try that engine ice coolant

I think it's the thermo switch in the radiator. Per the service manual, your fan should come on at 221 degrees fahrenheit +/- 3 degrees and stay on until your temp returns to 208 degrees fahrenheit. The thermo switch is what supplies this signal. I've PM'd you in case you want the service manual for your bike.

Yes most bikes come on at 220 that i have had. i'll change the temp sensor tommorrow and do a retest

You might also want to check your fan motor and wiring connections. I am pretty sure my fan is one speed and when it comes on it spins fast.

it could also be a beaten up radiator that isn't working efficiently any more.

I've encountered that problem before on my 99 ,it would overheat when the bike was'nt moving ,the thermostat was faulty and would not open. you might want to check that , you can test it by removing it and and put it in a pot of boiling water on the stove check to see if it opens at the correct temp. with a thermometer .hope this helps :thumbup

I had the thero units changed The bike turns on the fan at 243 degree and drops it down to 220 and then when it goes back to 243 it starts over. that seems to be the temperature its supposed to be at. im going to reread the manual to see if i can find the specs but this seems normal now.

Nope, it's not normal. The manual states that the fans should come on at 221 +/- 3 degrees.

I just started having this same problem. Let me know what works ie: thermo switch changing, or changing the thermostat. Thanks

I had this same problem last year with my 99 R1, I changed the thermo switch and checked the wiring and I had a jam so just rewired and whala perfection. Just follow the wiring diagram in the manual. Hope this helps.

???? what do you mean you had a jam in the wiring...? (specifics) (i probably spelled that wrong)

???? what do you mean you had a jam in the wiring...? (specifics) (i probably spelled that wrong) I mean electrical, the wiring from the relay to the thermo switch.

I'm trying to change my temp sensor too on my 99 r1 where is it? I can't find it anywhere on the bike

On the front side of the radiator, just under the radiator cap, is the thermo switch, and just under that is the temp sensor. There's a four step test procedure for each where you put them in water, heat the water up and look for the following readings - up to 220 degree fahrenheit, no continuity, above 220, continuity, back down to 208, continuity, below 208, no continuity.
