Hey all,
The time has come to change the clutch on my '02 R1. I'm not sure if I should go with another oem or try an after market application? If so, which are the better brands out there?

All input is appreciated :thumbup

I went with new OEM with my STM... they are solid and my old ones had very little wear. If your into tech check out the Barnett set up with cryo's steel plates. Overkill IMO

I don't know the added benefits but keep in mind that Graves has some friction plates.

My clutch was slipping after 18k miles. I checked a few local fora down here in europe and found out that the standard diaphragma clutchspring is to weak on the 98-03 models. I installed a diaphragma spring of a FJR1300 and the clutch feels as new. The spring of the fjr should be stronger and this is very noticable. Absolutely no slipping and the clutch feels much better and stronger. I even have a aching left hand after a ride; just as how it should be!

first i have heard that. but worth try. i would prefer SR3 spring conversion kit.. with all race springs your hand hurts after few minutes riding. so i went with 3 street and 3 race. worked well. or double stack 2 stock ones.

I don't need to replace a clutch yet, but when I do I might go with an OEM.. Just because the OEM has gotten 26k out of it.. Well I bought the bike with 10k on it and have put on 16k myself.. So if the OEM can last that long might as well stick with it eh? :)

Food for thought ~ My OEM plates had zero wear on them after 22K miles of spirited riding and 10 or so track days...

You may not need to replace your clutch internals for a while on the 02-03 R1s...

If you didn't know, the stack height of Barnett friction plates is less than OEM so If you use them with stock plates your clutch will slip "mine did" The only way I could get it to stop slipping was to use 2 springs. I bought the one for the FJR and it still wasn't enough difference so I put the old one on top of it. After a about six months of riding around like that and geting strange looks from the kids for having an oddly large left forearm from working a clutch with two springs I went back to OEM.

^^^Did you keep the FJR spring in there with the OEM plates?

I did keep the FJR spring I really can't say it made much of a difference though. I think you could have the same effect from a fresh spring. But the FJR spring and the R1 spring are the same price so you might as well just go with the one from the FJR. I can't really give you any proof that it is stiffer but that does seem to be the general consensus.

You know, I did this mod on my 2000 R1 and It's been so long ago that I can't remember. I think they are all the same but perhaps someone else can chime in and clear this up.
