Lost rearset bolt, now shifting is rough.

From searching the forum, I found that rearsets coming loose on the R1s is a fairly common problem. I have a 99 R1 and a few months ago, the upper bolt on the left rearset (shifter side) came out. It happened right as I had revved high in 1st and tried to shift to second (with some difficulty). Because of the timing and the way it happened, I thought I must have damaged something as downshifting became nearly impossible. A few weeks later, I finally realized that my rearset bolt had come off (yeah, I know I should've realized it earlier.) Anyways, after taking one of my bolts from the passenger peg bracket (same bolt) and re-securing the rearset, my shifting obviously became much easier since the shifter wasn't being pushed down while trying to downshift, but shifting in general was still rough. It takes several attempts trying to shift in between gears, especially going downshifting in lower gears (with 2nd to 1st being the most difficult). I spoke with another rider recently and he said that he's had this happen before and it typically damages the shift shaft when a bike is ridden with a loose rearset like that. I probably rode at least a hundred miles with the rearset loose. Can anyone shed more light on this and offer any possible damaged parts and/or maintenance I need to perform to get the shifting back to normal? Any suggestions are much appreciate. Thanks!

You might want to have a look at the little linkage arm from the gear lever/pedal to the rod as this one dried up on my bike and gear shifting became really difficult. Took it off, cleaned it and lubed it up and it was fine afterwards...hope this helps good luck :thumbup :thumbup

Just take the whole rearset/shift rod getup apart and put it back together. I dont see how anything on the inside of the motor could be damaged in any way... 8mm and 10 mm open ended wrenches if i can remember from a few days ago :) Good luck and keep the 99 alive

Update: I got the bike in my friend's garage last night and we tightened up the shift rod. It was loose and had resulted in extra play in the shifter. At first it didn't seem like it completely fixed the problem, but after taking it back to the house and then testing it again later and after about 15 miles of riding and shifting through all the gears, it seems to be working fine. Thanks for the input, guys. I'm glad it wasn't something major with the transmission. Next time I have shifting problems I'll know where to look first.
