I have a rear stand for my bike. no front. my Q is:

is it better to change and fill your oil with the bike on the kick-stand or on the rear 9race) stand. I have been reading alot about "3.1 quarts or you'll be sorry" type of thing.. so i wanted to be sure.

Thanks:dundun: :dundun:

The oil level should be checked (via the window) with the engine stopped, the oil warm, and the bike level...meaning both wheels on the ground and the bike straight-up-and-down (not leaning on the sidestand)

When you actually CHANGE the oil, probably either would be fine. Whichever facilitates the oil running out the drain-hole the best.

3.1 quarts is 3.1 quarts. If it's not "just right", then you can fill or drain as necessary.

NOO!!!! you must change the oil on the kickstand!!! when u change it on the rear stand, u dont get all the oil out, and will be overfull!!! When u get the plastics off, look at the location of the drain plug. When the bike is on the kick stand, you will see, that the plug is at the lowest point. Because the oil pan is an angle, and also when you remove the oil filter, being on the kickstand makes MUCH less of a mess. if you remove on rear stand, oil lands and settles on the exhaust header(i know that from experience, lots of smoke and bad smell for a few hundred miles) now when you pour the new oil, you want to check it with the bike level.

Does anyone have a picture of where the oil filter is located? If no picture, a detailed location of where it is located.

Thanks,

I went and took a picture from my bike. Its not a hard to access spot. Good luck.

I used to work for an oil filter company as a Design Engineer. The filter companies cross over so much that its hard to tell who makes what. The mobil 1 and purolator filters could be made by a lower cost perhaps lower quality manufacturer as these companies come to the large filter companies and ask for a filter to be made for them (private brands like mobil 1, CAT, Valvoline, etc.). Fram definitely goes the cheaper route with making filters (from experience, cutting them open and measuring them).

Your best route always is to go with OEM parts since they (Yamaha) knows they're product (engine application) the best.
