I have a 2000 r1 and all of a sudden my tach started going nuts. It will read the correct rpm for about 5 seconds, then go to 0 rpms for about 5 secs, then jump to 7000rpms for 5 secs, then it just keeps repeating. I am not mechanically inclined at all and wondered if anyone has had or heard of such a problem. Thanks guys...

It's due to the EXUP solenoid signal being interrupted. Do you have the stock exhaust on the bike? If so, you may have a bad solenoid, but you need to check the wiring first. I may have the one I removed from my bike up in the attic if you end up needing one. If you have an aftermarket pipe and the EXUP has been disconnected without a Sam's Servo Sub (http://www.samannasystems.com/faq.html) you'll have the same problem.
Good luck.

Yep, thats old school error codes. Bikeguy is right, thats the exup error. Mine did it, adjusted the exup (directions are all over the board), cleaned the terminals, and sprayed some lube on the cables. Never did it again.

My '00 R1 does it too on occassions but only when I first fire it up cold. If I turn ignition off and restart it doesn't do it again.

I was having the same problem with my tach. I just went and checked out the wiring and the harness fell out as soon as I touched it. plugged it back in all the way, problem is now gone.
