ZionMaster 03-15-2007, 11:35 AM I have noticed a very slight rattly noise in my engine when its hot, it may have been there before but I never noticed, to decribe it "if it was a car I would say it was the tappets" I only get this after a run out, is this normal, also when riding and the fan cuts in, it sounds like a Valerian space cruiser with the air going through, is this also normal.
I got it last september with 4k miles and I'm now on 5.2k miles. Perhaps I'm just being a paranoid android.
Comment please.
William YZF-R1 03-15-2007, 12:01 PM Sorry but yeah, your being a paranoid android.
R1's are well known for "tappet" noise and if your fan is anything like mine , most of the time it only comes on when stuck in traffic, hence the reason you can hear it.
ZionMaster 03-15-2007, 12:21 PM You bring a smile to my face, I was at the lights earlier waiting for the green when the fan kicked in on spin cycle 50, coloured wash only.
Thats what drove the comment, I adjusted the chain earlier, absolute bitch as it goes tighter when I'm sitting on it, obvious I know but I'm loosing it big time. My friend chased me on his ZX10 (06) the other day, when we got to the local meet he looked at me and said that there was something wrong with his bike, I asked him what and he said, ' I couldn't keep up with you through the bend's' the look on his face said it all.
Ade..

You made me smile too.:thumbup
I recently had to strip my carbs to clean out the pilot jets. At least one of the float chamber gaskets weeped afterwards. Fitted new ones yesterday and today had my first run out. I was sure I it was hesitating at low revs. After a couple of miles I discovered my choke was still 1/4 on. Problem solved.
ZionMaster 03-15-2007, 01:46 PM I can relate to that, I got a charger of the net as I thought the battery was dead, it was just after xmas, it was in first so it wouldn't start, I vever twigged the neutral light was off.
Nice talking to you, I bet I sound old? I'm not.

No you don't sound old - I know because I really am old. Take care and enjoy that bike. Get some earplugs or a louder exhaust - All problems solved.

Paranoia here? Done loads of miles, can't hear the tappets or the spin dryer anymore, had some diablo corsa's fitted and stuck an arrow can on.
What is it with these boxe's? When pushing hard up and down the box it's ace, tight and precise, smooth quiet and mental, at low speed it's clunky but not always depending on where the rev's are. Is this me being paranoid or are they all the same. I don't remember this on the old blade.
If I had to describe my R1, I would say it was a an RD350 on steroids, all or nothing.
Your thought's are highly valued.

Someone on this Forum described the earlier R1 gearboxes as "agricultural" which is an apt description. Neutral to first and first to second are the worst. As long as its not jumping in and out of second gear when you push it hard I would think you have nothing to worry about.
ZionMaster 04-24-2007, 02:11 PM Cheer's for that, it annoys me that when I start it, theres always the clunk when you put it into first, it's done 5.5k so should be fine.
So basically it's generic with R1's of this age. On the other hand you always know when it's in and probably need's to be this way to handle abuse when giving it some.
I know a lot of fast cars have terrible boxes until their made to work.
A soft box would give up.
