: 07's Running Hot?
Elcid 03-22-2007, 07:38 AM I've noticed this on my bike and a few others have commented on it in the Throttle Lag Thread so maybe it's worth another thread.
My bike tends to run 160's to 180's water temp when I'm riding but as soon as I get in stop and go traffic, it runs up to high 190's low 200's. Then I get into a gas station and it ramps up to 230 and I've seen 237 on it. I usually let the key sit in it so the fans can run to get some airflow around the radiator and motor until they cut out at 217, but this worries me. In the southeast, and I'm sure the southwest as well, the temperatures this time of year are a joke compared to July-September.
Does anyone know if this is an issue or if it happened with the '04-'06 models? I would hate to think I might have problems in stop and go traffic in 100+ degree weather. I ride in the winter but would hate to not ride because its too hot for the motor!
Are there mods for the cooling system (fans, radiator, water pump) that might fix this or am I barking up a tree I shouldn't worry about?
Yes, I'm a noob to sportsbikes too. I can admit it....:sing:
Thanks.
Wheat 03-22-2007, 07:43 AM The 04/06 does the same thing. Try Water Wetter and Distilled water, works great.
SleepY-R1 03-22-2007, 07:45 AM 00 does this too, I think this is just atypical of a sportbike, aren't meant to sit
Elcid 03-22-2007, 07:52 AM Wheat, Thanks for the heads up. I'll have to give water wetter a shot. I have heard of it before, but never used it.
Sleepy, Thats the joy of having a cruiser with no water temp gauge.....out of sight, out of mind!!!
ninjai_ruken 08-01-2007, 10:37 AM Gutted Y-Pipe Helps Also, I am running about 10 degrees cooler now.
UnknownHero 08-02-2007, 01:48 PM Must gut pipe!!!
I could cook a damn egg on my seat.
ninjai_ruken 08-02-2007, 01:55 PM Must gut pipe!!!
I could cook a damn egg on my seat.
Really? Even before I gutted it. My seat never got that hot, also get it ceramic coated that will help
UnknownHero 08-02-2007, 02:01 PM Does jet hot still exist??
And about that gutted pipe you do anything like a PCIII?
ninjai_ruken 08-02-2007, 02:03 PM Yeah, I need to do some work on my maps. It kinda runs like crap right now. I have a Power Commander. I just need to get off my but and get it tuned. It runs way rich right now. So I do not ride it to much.
Sean714 08-02-2007, 02:10 PM Mine was hitting 240+ last week in Big Bear any time I would stop to wait up for people. Even my over temp light came on a few times.... never had that happen with the 06.

:scared damn, mine has never gotten over 220+
toofass4u 08-03-2007, 07:12 PM i have had this same problem! mine got up to 239. the fans did kick on but i notice it when i turn the kill switch off. i went to my dealer about it and they said it will do that ESPECIALLY when you cut the bike off because that stops all circulation of coolant through the bike so yea, it will get hotter as it sits. i checked the coolant and it was ok. i even let the bike just idle for a while and it never got over 225 because the fans would kick on at 222. but they said never to just kill the bike because you're sittin in traffic. let it run.
I have also noticed that it is hot as hell to ride. i guess i'm not used to the undertail exhaust. but i still love the hell outta that R1.
FrostyBev 08-03-2007, 07:48 PM A buddy of mine was having that problem with 07.
He put in water wetter and he also changed his oil to Royal Purple 10w30 MC blend. He dropped his temps 20 degrees in idle.
My 2000 also runs really warm while idling and I noticed a 10 C drop in temps once I put in Royal Purple.
R1LOVER 08-03-2007, 08:09 PM You can't let these bikes sit and idle for more then a minute... after that they will overheat in 100 degree weather.
backer 08-04-2007, 05:24 PM my 02 never got that hot, but my 07 has seen 244F on a few occassions thats when the temp. light started flashing on and off, don't know what to do i heard gutting the ypipe would help, but i don't know how difficult that would be, and if it would help all that much.

Its not that hard if you know how to weld, It helped my temps a lot. But I do not recommend it with out at the very least a power commander.
slapwig 08-05-2007, 01:34 PM i have the same problem and my bike easily sees 245, and i've also seen the temp. light a few times. the bike is on day 5 sitting at the deallership for this problem. try bleeding the radiotor, i noticed a lot in mine when i got it.
also, does anybody's bike cook their ankles? my ankles cook so bad they turn bright red if i ride for about 40 miles or so. maybe i should just be happy they now match my bike.

Dude, go pick up your bike and ride it. The dealer won't be able to do a thing for the heat, that's just the way they are. This bike is not designed to be ridden in traffic or in town on hot days. Get on the highway and the temps go down quickly. On a 100 degree day at about 70mph my bike runs about 180.
Get into traffic and then it only goes up from there, again this IS NORMAL.

I concur, Mine Runs around 165-170 on a hot day going down the highway at 70mph, and right around 190-200 in traffic Maybe he should have read the above posts
McflyzR1 08-05-2007, 05:24 PM I have a 05 a with Water Wetter and Distilled water, runs allot cooler when moving on a hot day and takes a little longer to heat up when sitting but still gets hot when the air temp is 90 or above. My fans kick on @ 217 and the bike will get up to 221 but thats as hot as I have got it too. It's not going to hurt the bike but I wouldn't want to stay sitting. And yes get rid of the cat. you will allso notice you rear brake fluid will not turn dark as fast.:secret:
Vigi375 08-05-2007, 05:41 PM My 04 never ran as hot as my 07 does. Even with water wetter in it, it still jumps up to 240+ degrees. Cats are gutted, soooo.....I think the old Engine Ice is goin to be the next thing I try so, hopefully, it'll bring it down 5-10 degrees. Hopefully, I wish I had my 04 back, not one problem with it. Oh well...
R1LOVER 08-05-2007, 06:36 PM That's funny you mention the 04, cause my 04 ran hotter then or equal to the 07. I really think it's a litter cool on the 07.
toofass4u 08-05-2007, 06:42 PM yea, your ankles "cooking" is due to the cats. i have heard that when those are removed, whether it be with a slip on that eliminates the cats or just removing them, the heat isn't as intense.

AcemanR1 08-09-2007, 04:01 AM Having recently exchanged the ECU (lag problem) my only real qualm with the bike now is just the cooking of the ankles. Sure it gets hot in stop-n-go traffic (I live in S. Florida so there's no way of avoiding it) but it's pretty intense at high speed riding also. For the longest time I thought it was the exhaust pipe but I'm just about convinced it's engine heat pouring through the fairings and all over my lower legs, mainly the left. Since I haven't read a sure-fire way to solve it, I've decided to do the ghetto thing and just wear tube socks or riding boots. Now when I ride, the heat is just an after thought. The fan still kicks on at 223 like clockwork but now my ankles dont pay the price. A simple engine solution would be nice but oh well. Could be worse.
slapwig 08-11-2007, 03:44 AM i got my bike back a couple days ago and i guess the overheating was do to air pockets in the radiator.
also, does it void your warrenty if you change your exhaust? i wouldn't think so, i'm just wondering if anybody would know from experience.
Bogie 08-11-2007, 04:07 AM I've decided to do the ghetto thing and just wear tube socks or riding boots.
Are you freakin' kidding me? The "ghetto" thing?
I am not a gear natzi that is gonna tell you to wear full leathers everytime you ride but I never go out with out pants, full length socks and boots of somekind protecting my lower extremeties. :fact
What the hell you wearing?? Flip Flops!! :crash :lol :lol

I guess it depends on the shop, It did not my bike I bought my exhaust when I bought the bike.

:banghead: lol Ok, ok, I can see where that might have sounded pretty dumb. Nah, I just mean that tube sox have been added to my normal riding gear. More often than not I'm wearing low-top running shoes, ankle socks and jeans (and of course a shirt, jacket, helmet and gloves naturally) so while I'm riding, my pant leg rises up exposing my ankle. The socks are the ghetto cure for the heat. Tube socks will usually get you a ticket from the fashion police but a rider's gotta do what a rider's gotta do. Thanks for pointing out the error of my explanation. :dundun: <---me.
LATIN 08-14-2007, 04:35 PM Well i called my local dealer they told me to get engine ice. They told me drain the Flush the coolant & Refill with engine ice...So i looked into it & this is what i found http://www.engineice.cc/products.html :riding
slapwig 08-14-2007, 10:16 PM thanks guys, i think i'll try that engine ice or something along those lines...but currently i haven't had any problems with it overheating anymore...but it does get higher than my last bike.
CosmicR1 08-14-2007, 11:39 PM The 07 is a race bike and thus in traffic or stopped on public roads it heats up very quick. We got our 07's at the start of summer here in Australia and it was bloody boiling....literally lol. My advice is dont ride in the middle of summer as you will fry like a chook!!! :chair:
CosmicR1.
LATIN 08-15-2007, 04:42 AM Remember to :flush: the coolant & Refill with engine ice...if not use :machinegu shoot the r1..
UnknownHero 08-15-2007, 06:19 AM I'm getting a new stock radiator and having them fill it with engine ice. I will post up any diference.
LATIN 08-15-2007, 08:54 AM Make sure to get 2 gallons.. :machinegu :boom
UnknownHero 08-15-2007, 09:01 AM They are going to fill it up at the dealership before I get there. At least i know if I am ever thirsty I can drink the coolant now . . .
LATIN 08-17-2007, 09:50 AM UnknownHero any update with engine ice??:repo:
SPDKNGG 08-17-2007, 10:37 AM I heat wrapped my whole header up to the split on my 05. Temps never go over 212. I turn my bike off at stop lights.
Engine ice FTW!
Detoxification 08-17-2007, 10:51 AM Can't wrap Titanuim unfortunately... that was my origional plan untill I discovered the ehaders on the 07 were made from Ti.
My bike runs within the normal limits, it's when i shut the engine of and the coolant no longer cycles the temp jumps to 246 degrees... but that's just the coolant, so no biggie.
Does Engine Ice freeze?
SPDKNGG 08-17-2007, 10:57 AM Engine ice will not freeze.
Detoxification 08-17-2007, 11:53 AM Engine ice will not freeze.
awesome... might try it next summer. Put it in over the winter when I'm not riding quite as much.
07yzfr1 08-17-2007, 12:03 PM Does Engine Ice freeze?
Protects to -26 F
UnknownHero 08-17-2007, 01:22 PM I am still waiting for them to get the radiator in it. Took it in Monday, called yesterday and they said they havent recieved it yet. :dunno I will post as soon as i get the bike back. I will have to ride through 108 degree weather, so it should be a pretty good test :nforc:
LATIN 08-19-2007, 06:52 AM Well im taking the bike to the shop to get the service done... also im going to put engine ice...
LATIN 08-20-2007, 08:25 AM I am still waiting for them to get the radiator in it. Damn dude are you getting the radiator in lala land?:)
UnknownHero 08-20-2007, 08:29 AM That is what I am saying . . . the dealership where i got my CPU replaced had that thing in Next day.
I mean hell, the yami warehouse is only 2 hours away. But maybe waranty work is more tedious? No idea, but i dont like paying for somthing that I can't use. So how is the ice anyway?
LATIN 08-20-2007, 09:22 AM Im going to do it this week when i get the service done to it.... i took off nice f#$%King chunk of paint off the thiss weekend.........hit me with:chair: and then :machinegu :) :boom pull the freaking trigger..
LATIN 08-22-2007, 03:33 AM I've run engine ice for about 5 months now, including one track day. I have noticed the bike running alittle cooler. When in traffic, it takes longer to reach the point for the fans to kick on. I'm here in the South where its been hot.
I agree with rescue2... it still gets HOT but it takes a little longer and it seems to cool off faster once you get it up on the highway.
So it worth the :dollar to buy engine ice?
or
Not worth the :dollar to buy engine ice.
Yea, I think it was worth it. It took 1 1/2 bottles of ice to fill bike. If you plan on doing track days, all the more reason to run it.
yes, worth it.
IM GOING TO THIS WEEKEND:)
Detoxification 08-22-2007, 09:25 AM I heard a lot of tracks have banned Engine Ice :dunno
j07r1 08-23-2007, 03:52 PM I also have the same problem, gets really hot have seen 244 with the overheat light on and I have a full system with out a cat. And mine does burn my ankles, but its not only my ankles, lol, my knees always get burned, Im tall and my knees touch the frame and it hurts. When I ride around town I don't let my legs touch the tank or the frame, lol, kind of a pain in the a**. lol
LANESHARK07 08-23-2007, 10:19 PM Its Has To Be A Common Thing... Mine Does The Same Thing Im In Southern Cali.... I Talked To My Dealership Service Department And They Said Its Normal.... And I Just Got Mine And I Have Almost 1100 Miles On It...
LATIN 08-24-2007, 03:41 AM [QUOTE=LATIN;3119492]What I would have done is run the water through the radiator (unplugged first) with the engine still running. Keep running the water until you see the water coming out clear. After that I would shut the water and keep the motorcycle running until all the water comes out. Then when that is all done, you can add the engine ice. But be sure to plug the radiator first before adding the engine ice. :hammer:[/QUOT
Im taking my bike on monday to get service and change the coolant.. and going to put engine ice....
UnknownHero 08-24-2007, 06:35 AM Ok so got bike back yesterday, new radiator . . . green coolant.
Aparently the service guys couldnt find the engine ice. Because it was on the sails floor, about 35 gallons worth. At least the radiator swap and coolant was totally free, but still pisses me off they couldnt read a service invoice or ask people.
The really scary thing is if they were not inteligent enough to find the purple jug named engine ice in their own place of business, then how the hell can they put a new radiator, fan, oveflow assembly in a bike?
R1LOVER 08-24-2007, 06:14 PM back on topic for a minute here.... lol
I went for a little ride today.. here are my findings since it was hotter then fook today I remembered this thread.
in 85 degree heat here are my temps.
80 mph was about 169
70 mph 176
60 mph 178
50 mph 182
40 mph 192
in traffic the fans were on each and every time I came to a stop, even if it was for 2 seconds.
It was a little hotter on the way home, about 100 or so... anything under 50 mph was 190-225.... as soon as the fans came on it dropped about 5-10 degrees every time.
It's too damn hot to ride this bike in 80+ temps, but I was geared up as well, so that made it even hotter.
R1LOVER 08-24-2007, 06:16 PM I also have the same problem, gets really hot have seen 244 with the overheat light on and I have a full system with out a cat. And mine does burn my ankles, but its not only my ankles, lol, my knees always get burned, Im tall and my knees touch the frame and it hurts. When I ride around town I don't let my legs touch the tank or the frame, lol, kind of a pain in the a**. lol
Are you sitting if traffic or what? I have never seen anything over 230 or so.
but I do not sit in traffic either other then for about 10 seconds... lol
bradmedford 08-27-2007, 07:00 AM the dealer will not find a prob with the temp. and I would recomend a
y-pipe to stop your ankle burning problem.
LATIN 08-27-2007, 10:07 AM WoooHoooo got the bike service:) .. and i flush the green sh!t and put the engine ice... i took a ride the gage was 187 on the red light... pulled over i stop at a park sit there let run it took like 7 min for 223 for the fan to kick on... the guy told me to use dexcool and i looked at him that he was crazy f!@cker he even show me his bike:)
SPDKNGG 08-27-2007, 10:14 AM I just got done adding a manual fan switch. Now when I come to a stop or encounter traffic, I turn the fans on instead of shutting the bike off everytime. What a difference! I recommend this mod to everyone! Simple, cheap, and will help make your bike last longer. Espeacially the hoses and wiring with the plastic clips that get brittle over time....
LATIN 08-30-2007, 05:16 AM UnknownHero
I got the engine ice little cooler.... i do feel it cooler. now im going to take out the cat off.....
UnknownHero 08-30-2007, 06:18 AM It was 115 yesterday, and the temp was a steady 203 on the freeway, kind of wish they actually put it in.
But as far as uncomfortableness . . . right ankle was rare done. But cheeks, toasted, upper thigh, raw. (The tank was so friggen hot it was insanne, i parked the bike in the garage for 5 hours, and went out again, and it still burnt me through jeans!!)
My 07 runs hot lol.
j07r1 08-30-2007, 01:42 PM I wander if putting exhaust wrap on would help any, as far as comfort, since the exhaust runs right beside your right leg . And this might contribute to heating the frame, etc?
UnknownHero 08-30-2007, 02:03 PM Is it possible to just dip the bike in Jet Hot?
j07r1 08-30-2007, 02:07 PM Haha, yeah that would be nice, a complete ceramic coated R1.LOL Im also thinking about getting some of the knee grips to put on the side of the tank and getting an extra set and cutting them to put on the frame where my knees touch.
LATIN 09-02-2007, 07:00 AM Also get the y pipes http://www.tobefast.com/akrapovic-07-r1-y-pipe-c-52744-p-1-pr-1357.html
j07r1 09-02-2007, 12:18 PM I already have a full system, so I have the y pipes, this helps a little but its still unbearably hot.
UnknownHero 09-04-2007, 06:27 AM Tried to go riding yesterday in 109 degree weather. It is just too damn hot!! It was a beautiful 92 at Ten p.m. though . . .
My legs looked medium rare. I shut it off to get gas, started it up and saw 242 with a red light, went away after startup but damn, didnt even know it read that high.
1st performance 09-04-2007, 02:43 PM when it is 115 plus out in phoenix mine gets up to 225-226 sitting at stop lights but cool off below 200. it has never got hotter than that yet. my buddies o5 r1 runs the same temps.
XSBOOST 06-18-2009, 01:05 PM We have the perfect fix for all of you! It's the XSB Fan Control, It allows the rider to turn the fans on sooner before the bike heats up! Typically the bike will never get over 180 under normal conditions. Check out our site at XSBoostPerformance.com for more information.
Thanks,
Brent
iceman4357 06-18-2009, 01:10 PM Gut Cat, Water wetter, wrap entire exhaust with header wrap-Big decrease in temps.
http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=251477&highlight=exhaust+wrap
hoov100 06-18-2009, 05:09 PM the problem is once it gets hot, you heat soak the motor, so it will be even harder to make the bike cool down, but everything stated in the two posts above mine are all facts.
