My question is this. When you put the key in the bike and first turn it from off to on(before starting the bike). What makes the clicking/buzzing sound in the engine compartment as the tach needle maxes out and then returns to zero.
My problem is this. The other day I went to start my bike. There was a pop and smoke came out from under the tank. I smelled the smoke and it had that coppery electrical smell. I tried to start the bike and it started and ran fine. All my electrical components work, taillights, headlights, tach, odometer, speedometer, turn signals, etc. I have not noticed any performance problems with sputtering or stalling. But I did notice the following day(today) that it no longer makes the buzzing/clicking sound upon turning the key from off to on. Any suggestions on where to start would be great. Thanks fellas.

Check your fuel pump and your EXUP motor, look for blown fuses. You should find out what fried under the tank. The pump when working, will make a clicking sound untill pressure builds and you might be able to hear the EXUP motor zero out.
Even if your pump is smoked your carbs will gravity feed untill the tank is about 1/3 down, after that you will run out of gas with out the pump working. Let us know what you find, and It need to be investigated before you ride.
These R1s are great bikes I have been riding and working on them for years. I have a few of them myself. Great bikes

OK little update. Took the tank off and tested the fuel pump and it works just fine. Havn't found any blown fuses. What would be the easiest way to test the EXUP motor? Also I know the choke on the bike is manually controlled at the triple clamp but down by the carbs are they electronically controlled or completely manual?

The choke is manual on 2000 bike
When the ignition is first switched on,or when the engine is running, the EXUP system performs its own self-diagnosis. If a fault occurs, the Tacho will be seen to display zero rpm for 3 seconds, then 7000 rpm for 2.5 secs, then the actual engine speed for 3 secs, whereupon it will repeat the cycle until the engine is switched off

Well I took a look at the tach and it just pings out and then returns to zero. I can hear the fuel pump click as it builds up pressure. I am at a loss of what it could be. I am goign to test the servo for the exup as the service manual recommends but other than that I have no idea what it could be :boom

The only noises are the fuel pump and exup servo motor. If your fuel pump works, I'd place money on it being your exup servo motor.
