Hi, got a little problem. hope you guys can help. Riding home from work just now I discovered that when i turn on the turn signal (left or right) the whole electronic display goes dead. switching it (turn signal) off again all the figures of "8" (the LCD) appears, the fuel light comes on for a second etc. basically the same kind of little "check" it runs through when starting up. Very 1st time this happens. Bikes goes normal, no jerking or anything else thats strange. What do you think ? 1. wiring ( must admit could be a lot of fun telling people I had a bike on fire under my arse at 250 kph.... thats if i survive it.....Colin Edwards had that shit happening to him in world supers , if i recall,) 2. the actual whole speedo cluster unit something faulty in there ?? 3. also whole display sometimes also just goes on and off to tune of turn signals OR or goes dead, but comes on normal again when signals turned off. 3. i havent even heard of something like a bike auto electrician in this part of the world........"insert smiley here that goes OooH SHIiiiiTttt!!!!!!!!" Bike is da original monzsta , a '98 in red/white. Plse help THANX

check the big white connector undere the left fairing infill.....these are prone to corrosion and collecting water....carefully pull the plug apart, clean it up and apply some dielectric silicon grease before reconnecting....this is more than likely the cause of your troubles. good luck

looks like u got a short circuit in the turn signals assembly . when u go back to normal the lcd resets itself because it gets the power back on.i dont think its a problem of the lcd / tach unit .

Hi, I checkedout the turn signals assembly and all looks ok. bear in mind i'm no autoelectrician or mechanically inclined. just LOVE to ride. She failed to start after putting in fuel at a station just now , but pushed started easy enough and ran ok for 3-4 km's into my garage at home and then would'nt start. (i hope) it is as simple as the battery reaching the end of its one and a half year life (? - is it normally that short ??). its a GS-GT 12b - 4 Valve regulated lead acid one. Anybody please, any ideas or similat expereince. I hate to spend on another one only for that not to be the problem. My own theory (and keep in mind i'm no mechanic) is the main circuits (lights, ignition) draws current. as soon as you activate secondary like brake lights, turn signals etc it does what u ask but cuts power momentarily from the display making it restart, like i said in my 1st post. all because the battery's had it

could be a rectifier or stator problem too....theyre known for that

i dont have any means to test the battery. hopefully find a shop open tommorrow, being easter weekend and all. but if its battery do they let go JUST LIKE THAT with no warning. Bike has started 1st time every time hot or cold for last 1 and a half years. thanx for response inkedR1 , rectifier i have idea what it is. WTH is the stator ?

the stator is on the side of the engine opposite the clutch and is known to failure...there is a few threads on here about stator failure which in turn cause the regulator/rectifier to burn out and not charge the battery...hopefully yours is just a dead battery that needs replacing.. good luck fella

ok , now its all clear . your charging system is not working . as the guys above allready said , it could be the stator or the rectifier . if u got no idea how to use a voltmeter to test the charging voltage , leave it to the shop mamg ;) btw , its better to take out the battery and put it for charging , that if u got a battery charger . if not , the battery will be dead too.

I am inclined to agree, there are three components involved with the charging circuit - Stator, rectifier and battery. If one fails it can break down the other components. Unfortunately, a lazy dealership will replace all three rather than accurately determining which components are faulty and then only replace the faulty ones. BUT before going this route check all the loom connections involved and earths are good (clean and unburnt)and lubricated with dielectric/silicone grease. Especially the regulator connector, the big white one under the LHS carbon infill and the loom connection to the instrument cluster.

public holiday long weekend here, so all stealerships and workshops closed. Spoken to someone else and he said Rectifier/regulator failure on those R1's is almost unheard of, they just go on and on and on.... but generally in many cases i'm the exception to many rules...LOL. But question still : all the symptoms i've described in my 1st posts, can a broken/fault rectifier or dying battery cause that ?? I hope so, cause dont wanna get involved with metres of wiring and connectors and other Sh!t.
