Please somebody help, im new here, i read something on an exup but not much, i bought a 99 R1 , when turn key, no tach movement what so ever , start it up, no movement. drive it , only MPH,Temp, work. at night i just found out no lit display..........on lit tach.......the whole cluster doesnt lithg the f up. the wires are exposed/noconsole insert fairings, you know those little black six inch pieces of plastic that Yamaha wants $85 dollors for each .......i read somebody elses problem with tach going wild but this is different ,,,maybe corroded wiring harness???? or EXUP something? please somebody help....................thanks Tom.

Hi Tom,
Welcome and sorry to hear of your problems.
The tacho gets its signal from the ECU (big rectangular box under riders seat), As you said, I recommend you check all the loom connectors for burning/corrosion starting from the back of the console and working rearwards. If they do look dirty, clean well and apply dielectric grease to avoid corrosion in the future.
It is likely that it is either the loom cluster connection or the big white one under the LHS carbon infill (below clipon).
You never know, the illumination problem may just be blown bulbs which can be replaced but see how you go.
BTW the tacho does not do an automatic sweep when you turn on the ignition on the '98 - '99 models.

BTW Tom ur EXUP is for ur exhaust valve under the bike, do u have a aftermarket exhaust on? If so check to see if that EXUP valve servo is plugged in or not taken out, cause i THINK ppl that take out the exup servo have a error code come up, or the tach doesnt work.
Hope that helps.

K so I kinda have the same issue but mine lights up and functions however when I turn it on the needle idles fine for a sec but then bounces everywhere on the tach then drops back down then goes back to idle or whatever my rpm's are at the time. Could this be because I have a 00 upper wire harness? Or whats the ex-up thing that you guys are talking about I kinda know what it is but I didnt know it does anything to the tach but could that be off?? Or do I just need to get the 99 upper wire harness?

Sounds like its trying to tell you something, when it bounces up what RPM does it rise to? There are error codes displayed in this way by the tacho.

+1 If it is your exup then your tacho will show zero rpm for 3 secs, then 7000 rpm for 2.5 secs, then actual engine speed for 3 secs and continue this cycle until the engine is switched off

Ok so I checked on the tach when I turn the key to the on position it flys to 8.5 stays for a couple sec then goes back down to zero. The same happens when I turn on the bike but after it goes back to zero it jumps back to show the real rpm's then goes back down and continues again. So does this mean anything? Thanks again for your help

The nearest to that is 8000rpm - Improper connection for the fuel level sensor.
3000rpm is the Throttle position sensor
7000rpm is the exup servo motor
If you have an aftermarket coloured tacho background which involves removing the needle it MAY explain the 500rpm discrepancy.

Have you checked your plug under the tank for the fuel sensor.
Maybe clean the connectors and dielectric/silicon them before putting back together......if not you will have to check the fuel sensor itself

thanks I'll look into it this weekend.
