i have a 2001 r1 and i have been having this problem since last season. When i am in 2 nd gear and only in 2 nd .I get the rpms up to about 8 to 9 grand it feels like the clutch is slipping then grabs again but i was reading this other artical and they said something about shift doggs now i tried looking up shift doggs to find out a little more about them but found nothing .So if someone could help out that would be great

if it was the shift dogs u would probably hear loud noises and it would probably jump out of gear , thats what i got

no im not hearing a loud noise so i prolly shouldnt worry bout the shift dogs my first instinc was to just put a new clutch in i thought maybe the friction plates or steel plates were going bad so is this what i should do

its hard to tell if the problem is only in second.try to accelerate hard in first and check if u feel any slippage.

2nd gear.. roll it up hard thru rpms.. if it jerks or jumps and tries to come out of gear.. its doges on 2gears.. 2nd and 6th driven gears. those are 2 that go 2gether to make 2nd gear. normal problem.. time to replace few parts and maybe shift forks. it if clutch it will slip in other gears.. put bike in like 5th gear going 15 mpg.. grab clutch and rev it up to about 9-10k rpms and dump clutch. rpms should drop immediately and if they stay up and come down real slow or not at all..then its clutches

i can run it hard in 1st and it doesnt jump or slip at all but i will try doing it in 5th gear and see what happens

its either chain too loose.. have u check it?? or ur sprockets are bad or bad chain????!!? if not its second gear. time to pull motor out. so check and tighten and lube chain well first.. adjust chain with u sitting on bike.. or have someone sit on bike for you and check it. u should have about 1/2 inch of play up and down in middle of chain with weight on it.

so if the chain and sprocket are worn out it will make it slip but why only in 2nd (chain and sprocket are stock )if 2nd gear was bad wouldnt there be shavings in the oil

chain was kinda tight when i sat on itprolly had a 1/4 in play maybe less then that so you think maybe i wore the sprockets out also what about the last post
