When I am in neutral and shift it into 1st gear my bike lunges a bit and makes a small grinding sound. If i bleed the clutch will it make my shifting more smooth? What can I do to make it go into 1st gear easier.

first off what year R1 do you have ? 2000-2001 r1's have a cable clutch, not HYD ! what i have found is before i put it in 1st gear from neutral i pull the clutch and hold it for appox 7 to 8 seconds then put it in 1st with little to no clunk or lunges as you call it, give it a try and you might even try 10 seconds it might work better.

its just how the clutch is... nothing new.. no worries unless you think its really bad. Go 2 a mechanic and have him take a look

could be plates little dry.. u could take them out and re-oil them by soaking them for an hour or so. or could be warped steel plate.. prolly just little dry.. get off bike and stand on right side. lean bike as far over to right side as you can without dropping it.. that will hlep put little oil on it.. BTW u have to get it over pretty far.. the peg should touch ground..well almost.. and have slutch lever pulled at time.. maybe ziptie it closed while u do this. there have been some guys that put pillows on ground and lay bike on them on its side to oil them... easier than taking them out.. but not good on plastic
