:thumbup 1longR1 04-23-2007, 12:11 PM what year model R1? there are alot of good post on it with pics. its not hard job if u have some mechanical skill. mostly with 2nd you have to replace at least 2 gears(2nd and 6th are 2 that tie together to make 2nd gear) and maybe one shift fork. really u wont know till u take it out and see what damage is. really send it to R&D in florida and have them undercut it.. they will replace or the undercutting will take care of damage areas. normally u need to check shift drum and forks. since ur there, its good idea to replace them anyways.... better safe than sorry binnyblade 04-23-2007, 01:00 PM what year model R1? there are alot of good post on it with pics. its not hard job if u have some mechanical skill. mostly with 2nd you have to replace at least 2 gears(2nd and 6th are 2 that tie together to make 2nd gear) and maybe one shift fork. really u wont know till u take it out and see what damage is. really send it to R&D in florida and have them undercut it.. they will replace or the undercutting will take care of damage areas. normally u need to check shift drum and forks. since ur there, its good idea to replace them anyways.... better safe than sorry

thanks for that :thumbup marcaztls 04-24-2007, 01:30 AM Hello mate :thumbup
First off, have you got a manual? If you have, and as Long said, some mechanical skill, it's quite easy with a bit of time and patience to do. It's a shame you're not that bit closer because I'm taking the motor out of my 03' at work today (I own a bike shop near Stamford) to sort my third gear problem.
As long as you're methodical and patient, you'll be fine. When you eventually have the gearbox in your hands, and as long as budget allows, replace everything you suspect to be damaged or worn. It'll pay in the long run or you'll be having it to bits again soon. Pay careful attention to what gears mate with what and ideally replace the gear/s that engage with the damaged ones. One brand new good vs. one slightly worn gear will accelerate the wear on the new one.
Good luck mate :) sss r1 04-24-2007, 05:23 AM sorry for thread jacking
just a tiny question :)
i'm opening my motor for 2nd gear problem too , i was wondering if i can remove the cylinders and rings on the way to check em up, without openning the cylinder head...can i do that? 1longR1 04-24-2007, 09:17 AM u can pull them out... but getting them back in... no way without pulling head.. you would have to be like octopus to put crank back in that way... i dont know.. its possible..but not sure if you can squeeze rings to put pistons back in from bottom.. maybe you can... arkie6 04-24-2007, 11:49 AM I don't think you can pull the pistons from the bottom, at least not on the early R1/FZ1 engine. The cylinder bore diameter doesn't continue all the way down to the crankshaft support webs - you will hit those webs with the piston from what I recall when I had my engine apart. arkie6 04-24-2007, 11:58 AM The hardest part for me when I fixed the 2nd gear slip on my FZ1 was getting that danged generator rotor off. That was a b!tch. Do a search on the forum here for alternate ways of getting it off if the puller threads strip out like they did for me and many others here. I used a harmonic balancer puller and some modified machine screws that fit in the holes in the face of the rotor. I also put some heat to the end of the crankshaft and rotor followed by some compressed air in the crankshaft bolt hole to cool/shrink the crankshaft. The rotor popped right off after that.
Over at the www.yamahafz1oa.com forum under the "tech tips" section, there is a tab titled "Fast Franks Transmission 101" that is quite useful if you are tackling this 2nd gear slip problem. He goes into detail on what to inspect and what to replace. For me, it was a bent shift fork that didn't hold the 6th gear over far enough to fully engage the dogs into 2nd gear that resulted in the dogs wearing off on the edges. Also note that these gear dogs are already undercut from the factory. binnyblade 06-18-2007, 04:49 PM all went ok took my time
had no problems with flywheel that came of ok using a bolt of same thread and an impact driver
