Hey Guys, I could use some help. I Have a 99R1 that will not start. I put it in neutral with the kickstand up, switch on, key on, and apply the start button but it will not crank, the lights dont dim at all, and there is no clicking from the relay. This is an intermittent problem though. Ill have to push start it and it works fine for a month. I ride it everyday so it's probably not a charging problem. It will start, ill ride it for 20 miles, it sits for 5 min or so and it wont start. I need Some Help. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Check the big white connector under the left hand fairing infill for corrosion. Be careful when you pull it apart This plug causes lots of different probs....clean it and apply some dielectric silicon grease before reconnection Start there first....then check fuses etc

mickr1 is right. I had the same problem and after spending quite a bt of $$$ and some late nights in the garage replacing the battery, the generater, the stator, the rectafier, and the fuses, I still had the same problem... she just wouldn't start consistently. When I did get it started, it would drain the battery cause it wasn't charging, hence the generator and stator replacement. Now it started but I could notice the "drain" at night cause the lights would dim off & on killing my new battery. Obviously, I still had a problem. So I tore the thing apart (not literally) and noticed there had been a "small" fire at the rectifier (a little black box located at the front of the rear tray under the seat). So I replaced that and STILL had the problem! Hmmmm... So my wife suggested I replace the entire wiring harness and I did replace BOTH wiring harnesses. Funny thing, after close examnation of the white connection box (located under the front, upper fairing panel) linking the front wiring harness to the main wiring harness , it was apparent that there had been some type of fire in there too causecause looked like someone had taken a butane lighter to it! The moral of the story is "check that box" and see if that's your problem cause it was definitely mine.

I had the same problem when i first bought the 98- it ended up being the wires from the ignition that had jarred lose. Just make sure everything is plugged in good!
