1longR1 05-31-2007, 01:13 PM flip motor over.. and start taking it apart. you have to split motor apart to get to tranny. get service manual. it will help
sss r1 06-01-2007, 05:12 AM yup , remove the stator and the 2 coolant tubes on the head so it will be easier to turn the engine upside down.
i gotta long way to go :) should look like this
shakejuhn 06-01-2007, 06:46 PM ok i got about 4 qustions im still stuck on this project.
1.) i did not take the clucht off while it was still on the bike how do i get it off?

hhhm , man, u should have listened to me in your previous thread . i told u to open those things while the motor is still there :nopity:
now its gonna be pretty hard .
u need a to find a bolt to screw into the stator , or get a stator puller.
read the previous thread u made , i explained how to remove the timing and some other things.
Jeff.Smith 06-02-2007, 09:09 AM I went through the same exercise with my 98. I took lots of pictures to make sure I could get it back together. I think they will help you.

If you don't have an impact driver, you need one. I bought an electric one relatively cheap. I use it on the front sprocket and I believe I just put the bike in gear and used the impact to take the nut off the clutch hub. You will also need to use the impact and a flywheel puller to get the stator off. When you put it back together, tighten that stator bolt with the impact also. I had to go back and tighten it because it started slipping which resulted in to current being generated. I don't think you have to touch that timing belt, but you can get a good idea by looking at my pictures.
Personally, I think it is better to leave the engine together while pulling it out. You are less likely to cut yourself or damage something while getting it out. I did the entire job alone....and that engine is heavy :)
micky 01-31-2010, 01:59 AM Thanks jeff.great pictures and it certainly helped me a lot, thanks mate.
just to bring this thread to the top to save people searching
Jeff.Smith 01-31-2010, 08:27 AM I hope it went well. I am glad to see others are still getting use out of the pictures.
Eclipse 02-02-2010, 05:59 AM You don't need to touch the timing chain, leave well alone!
As others have said, flip the engine over.
The flywheel is a bitch to remove without the proper tools. Invest in the tool and you will save hassle and damage. Even if it's just the bolt type it makes it a hell of a lot easier.
I also posted some pics HERE! (http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4286495&postcount=8)
EDIT: Take the pipes out of the head before you flip it, or at least make sure the weight is not resting on them if you don't.
If you look at the picture of the engine from above that I posted, you will see the timing chain is still attached. I think it's just the case that has to come off so that it can be split.
Ryans79 02-02-2010, 11:15 AM Hi, I just got my tranny done close the engine, I want to know if the chain that's comes on the pump must be completely stretched or a bit loose ?
Eclipse 02-02-2010, 11:27 AM Depends whether you took the tensioner off or not.
Ryans79 02-02-2010, 11:43 AM yes all was remove, but after the mounting up the mechanic said that it's normal that the chain is not stretch. So after mounting up, must the chain be stretch ?
Ryan
Ryans79 02-02-2010, 12:04 PM any idea ??
Eclipse 02-02-2010, 01:19 PM It's slack until the tensioner is put back on and reconnected to the oil pump. Make sure you route it correctly through the tensioner.
It shouldn't be really stiff and is still quite flexible.
EDIT: It should not be really loose and flopping about.
Ryans79 02-02-2010, 01:28 PM Thanks my friend I will check that
