My first Highside

I've got a thousand stories of this trip to tell, almost of them are good, some bad, but I finally have time to post up about the big one - my crash. Yep - I highsided. d'oh. First of all, yeah, highsiding sucks. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. However, I feel like the luckiest guy in the world today - I don't think anyone could have come out better from this than I did today. it's really quite amazing, and I thank my lucky stars for it. As far as the details go, there's not much to tell - it was all my fault. I basically lost the rear end on a left-hander, the bike swung sideways, and it launched me like a bucking bronco over the handlebars. I landed on my back, mostly on my left side just above my lower back. Because I wasn't going too fast, and I landed fairly flat, it didn't do any damage at all - I'll have a bruise there, but nothing more. The worst damage was to my two fingers and thumb on my right hand. My thumb got sprained - it's swollen today, but I have pretty good mobility. My first two fingers have a nice hole ground into the sides, right next to the main joint of the fingers. It's nasty. Doesn't really hurt all that much, and I can move them, but just to be sure, I'll go see a doctor about them when I get back. The important part is that I can still grip the throttle and brake just fine. Woot!!!! Even more amazing - the damage to the bike is nothing like I would have thought it would have been - right side is rashed pretty bad, frame slider broke off, and ground the clutch cover a little. The windscreen broke off too, and the fairing stay bracket is cracked. As bad as it sounds, it's all still solid and very rideable - we did a Cherahola run today already! So anyway, I'm feeling VERY VERY lucky that I came out so good on this. What a deal!!! Other than this incident and some run-ins with some idiotic Harley riders, this convention has been awesome - you guys don't know what you're missing. :thumbup

You want to hear a REALLY lucky story, go ask Miss Landry about my highside from a couple weeks ago...She saw the lack of damage to the bike and will testify to it. I took a nasty one around 70mph, I have no idea what happened because I woke up 3.5 hours later. I'd assume I got the back end around from what people told me, but I can't be sure as there's no video or pics of it. Nothing busted, just sore, bike needed a new slider puck and swingarm spool. It's got little black swirls on the RH mid fairing from sliding through the marbles and some very light scratches on the lower portion of the mid fairing. No exhaust damage as I was running a slash cut pipe for the event. Again, glad you're ok, drink some extra "water" from the jug tonight and make your thumb feel better :lol

glad ur alright man. last time i was at the gap, i came TOO damn close to a highside. It was a left hander as well, the rear stepped out, bucked me a half foot or so off the seat, and the handlebars started rapidly shaking left and right. then all the sudden BOOM it just grabbed and went straight, like nothing had happened. crazy........well, get better soon maybe ill see ya tommorrow:riding

thanks everyone - and a big thanks to everyone that helped me out when I went down and got my bike out of the side of the road. I can't remember everyone who was there, but Shane, Eddie ( I think), Aaron, Peg Grinder, and some others (feel free to chime in) all came to give me a hand and I owe them all for that. things are good - we tore up the Dragon today and whored it up big time in front of Laura's camera. I couldn't do this trip without getting a bazillion pictures on the DVD now, could I? The BEST run of the day HAD to be the one up the hill behind and in front of the T-Rex: http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa314/Skanky2000/DSC01068.jpg That thing is FAST and can corner like crazy!!! That was a ride that I'll remember for a long time - was really really fun.

Hey thanks for the video!!! :rock I'm just trying to catch my breath after returning home safe and sound. Got a lot of stuff to catch up on, you know? Thanks everyone for your help and concern. I had a BLAST at the convention, even after the highside (as the video shows). I got another run with the T-rex with Bill (from McCoy's) at the helm and I kid you not - it would take a SERIOUSLY good rider to be able to keep up with that thing. Unbelievable.
