fjorn 06-20-2007, 07:29 AM Alright, so I'm looking at doing the trackday for Glenn in the fall at Jennings on the '07 YZ450F. Question I have is what wheels to get? I'm not able to spend a lot of money on them, but at the same time I know I'm going to spend over $600 most likely on rims alone.
Here's the deal:
1) Wheels will only be used anywhere from 1-3 times per year
2) The tracks I'll be using them on will be either DCTC (very tight, slow speed track) or BIR (very fast high speed track). However, most likely DCTC will be the most ridden of the two
3) No plans for regular street use unless I switch to a WR450 converted to a motard
I'm thinking of just getting another set of Excel rims laced up, but unsure of hubs and tires as well. Again, I'm looking to do this as low cost as possible while still maintaining a higher level of quality because of how infrequently the wheels will be used.
ChampionsR1 06-20-2007, 07:49 AM Most important is, do you wanna run Michelin Supermoto specific tires? or Dunlop Supermoto specific tires.
If you go with Michelin, get a 17" front wheel
If you go with Dunlop, get a 16.5" front wheel
no matter what, buy a 5" wide rear wheel, dont go for that 4.25" crap
fjorn 06-20-2007, 07:58 AM What's the difference on the size of wheels? I could probably get a better deal on Dunlops than I could Michelin.
Currently, I'm 6'1" and 264 pounds(dropping) so I'd need to find something that's capable of handling my size at the moment.

well, Michelin says their front tire is good enough to not need a 16.5". Most people go to the 16.5" to cure front end chatter. For just playing around here and there, go 17", much easier to find tires, and you still can run street tires. The 16.5" is better if your going racing, but slicks and rains tires are the only 16.5" you will find. The Michelin is good, Monster Energy Kawi supermoto teams runs a 17" front and Michelins.
Dunlop sm specific UK tire sets and Michelin sm specific tire sets are both almost $400
I go thru 2-3 sets a month, thats a mortgage payment.
fjorn 06-20-2007, 01:55 PM I don't plan to race, and if I were to get a WR450 I'd put these on it for street use. Sounds like 17" is the way to go.
What about wheel brands/models themselves? Should I just go with Excel rims and have them laced up?
fjorn 06-24-2007, 08:26 PM Recommended places to buy laced up SuMo wheels? I found a place that's advertising prices between $950-1500 for an average set. But, they're not breaking the pricing down that well. It was a site linked from supermotojunkie.com

Not sure on the best place for a good deal but Corey is right, 17" will be best, especially since race and street tires come in that size.
Put some money aside for brakes as well. You'll need something bigger up front. eBay might help for cheap stuff off a wrecked street bike. Imagine getting some 07 R1 stoppers up front.:thumbup
mikess 06-25-2007, 08:41 AM i checked to see if my o5 r1 rotors would fit my 04 yz250f but they didnt. go with the 5" rear wheel like Champions said and give Jeff a call at East Coast Wheels. He builds wheels for just about everyone. See if hes got any used wheels in. I got a used set, used for about 4 laps complete for 900$ pro series excel. they have the interchangeable carriers. Great for when i buy a new bike, say a Cr450f, i can just buy new carriers and spacers and im ready to go. http://store.eastcoastwheels.com/info.html im pretty sure his number is in there somewhere. believe me when i say, once you ride SM
YOU WILL BE HOOKED!!!! Buy good stuff now cause you will be pissed when you go budget and then have to buy new stuff.
Jacob 06-25-2007, 01:22 PM You might check this place also. I think he builds big bike wheels.

fjorn 06-25-2007, 04:24 PM Thanks for the info guys. Again, I really only plan to ride motard 2-3 times a year, as the bike will be primarily MX ridden. I don't have the funds to pick up another bike, so I'm going to build it for what I will ride it mostly: MX
