Gawarrior 09-24-2007, 08:28 AM ALL UPDATES WILL BE RIGHT HERE ON THIS POST
Ok, it's that time again this will be the Official thread for all the info for the 2008 R1/R6 Forum East Coast Convention at Deal's Gap. Let's keep this thread for info and convention talk. The R6-Forum will be joining us again this year. The R6 Forum is owned by the same people, the McCoy's, that own the R1 Forum so we are going to make this a combined event for this year. Although we will keep up with all the R1 Forum stuff here and they will keep up with the R6 Forum Stuff over there.
FUNDS REQUIRED: $100 per person for dinner each night. $20 for a convention shirt. Add $5 for paypal fees. Total is $125 per person.
FOOD THREAD: http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3200867&posted=1#post3200867
PAYPAL FOR FOOD MONEY IS gawarrior@comcast.net
Cut off will be May 15th 2008 for that money. We will have arm bracelets to identify if you have paid or not.
Here are the details to date:
Date: June 16-22th
These are the dates that it will Officially be going on. But the Dinners will still be Monday-Friday and Yamaha Dinner Saturday again. If you can't come the whole week at least try and get there by Wed or Thursday. The whole area is unbelievable during the week when things aren't as crowded.
Place: Deal's Gap
info about the Gap: www.tailofthedragon.com (http://www.tailofthedragon.com/)
Lodging: Fontana Village
Website: www.fontanavillage.com (http://www.fontanavillage.com/)
Rates: CLICK HERE (http://www.fontanavillage.com/fontanavillage_accommodations.html) WE do get Discount Rates, But you MUST tell them you are with the Yamaha R1 Forum Group 1-800-849-2258 tell them you are with R1-Forum www.fontanavillage.com (http://www.fontanavillage.com/)
Make your reservations early. IT WILL FILL UP!!! It would really suck to not be able to get a cabin at Fontana:yesnod There are other places to stay but you want to stay up there with us for sure.
They do have Inn rooms available this year, but I suggest getting a cabin. You can come out a lot better and they can get you closer to where will be set up in a cabin also. And to be honest some of their cabins are just a cheap as the Inn Rooms. Look at their website and inquire of them by phone to make your choice. 1-800-849-2258. I would suggest making reservations as early as you can, everywhere fills up that time of year up there. Make sure you tell them you are with the R1 Rally so you get the special rates and so that they put you with us, if there are any problems ask to speak with Toni or Debbie or just let me know. They have blocked off cabins and rooms for us. So start making reservations as soon as you can. For the guys coming up as singles I would suggest getting together with other folks on the Forum and splitting the cost of a small or large cabin. There are gonna be several cabins available. Some of them brand new!
Fontana also has campsites available if you want to camp. They are approx. a mile down the road.
CUT OFF DATE TO RESERVE CABINS/ROOMS IS BETTER HURRY UP!!!
We have X amount of cabins blocked off for us at a discounted rate, after March 1st they will be released to the general public and WILL sell out. SO GET YOUR RESERVATIONS MADE!!!!
Everyone is welcome ? but please realize that this group is made up with many types of riders of different skill levels and desires. This is not about getting together to race, or to drag other people into riding above their limits! Everyone is expected to ride at their own pace and have a good time!
FOOD: Thread is up. I need everyone to vote in this thread so I know how much food to get Fontana to prepare.
COOK: Fontana Village
REMEMBER: Deadline of May 10th for all funds!!!
Alcoholic beverages: BYOB
T-SHIRTS: PRE ORDER ONLY!! I will post up a thread for the shirts when we get that setup.
PHOTOGRAPHY: Snapz. We know as Laura. As far as I know she will be joining us again to take all the photos. I will have her start a thread and handle all this.
PRIZES: Of course we will have prizes again this year. These will be given out at the Yamaha dinner on Saturday night. You HAVE to be a member of the R1 Forum or R6 Forum and also on the definates list to be eligible for the Prize drawing. Tony, I overheard a few guys at the track this weekend saying Wal Mart had the 10X10's for like $69 and the better ones for around $80.
Looking forward to another year with all you slackers and drunks. :beer '08 will be my fifth year going. It's the best time you will ever have on you're bike. I might have to join Bogie on some early morning runs on the Gap along with some late runs next year. This seems to be the best time to ride the Gap.

Yeah Wal-mart has them pretty cheap. So does Sams Club.
Gawarrior 09-24-2007, 06:14 PM I like Yamaha but that is an insane price for a 10x10 easy up.

Cool, I'll check them out this weekend. Getting up early really was the ticket. Just remember the gas station opens at like 8 so make sure your tank is full the night before.

:stpd: I love Yamaha, but I love the little bit of money I got a lot more. Go to Wally World and get ya one of the cheaper ones, then while you're there pick up some white spray paint and some stencils and paint it on the canopy yourself!
Kevap 09-24-2007, 06:21 PM Anyone know a good cheap place to get those 10x10 canopy's?? I think we need more at our cabin.
I think this is the one we should get. It's 12 x 12. Comes with stakes to hold the canopy down. (how well it does... who knows) Frame is foldable, so not much assembly will be needed. Comes with wheeled carry bag for easy transport. It's like the one that we used last year, expect it's 12 x 12! :rock
We can go in 50/50 on it Tony. It would be around $60 each. Wanna buy it? :dunno

Good to know stu! Thanks! Do the stakes actually work? Or would you suggest another way of holding the canopy down?
Under a good wind those stakes will pull right up. The "feet" of the legs should have a hole in them. Make a form for an 8" cube and fill it with mixed sakrete. Stick a 5/16" bolt into it with the threads sticking straight up. (You may also want to put a 1' long piece of chain into it so it forms a handle you can carry the block with). Once you put up the canopy, set the legs down onto the studs and wing-nut it down. Won't go ANYWHERE!! ...and you don't have ropes to deal with. You also may want to look around and find the canopies that have a vented top in them, it will open up and dump air pressure when the wind blows and also keep it from wanting to blow around.

I have the 10'x10' that I use on occasion as well. Never had to stake it down, but I know many people who bring tires, weight plates, etc to keep the canopy in place when it's windy on pavement at track days. Might also want to invest in some 1/4" rope in case of very windy days and you need to tie it down so it doesn't bend.

Looks good Kevin. I can get but not yet. I'm now working some OT this weekend. Looks like that is their set price so we have some time to wait and see if it goes on sale for less. If we really want to stake it down I have .22 caliber nail gun that will definitely go into the blacktop but should be easy to lift straight up and out.
Gawarrior 09-24-2007, 06:53 PM If it rains no easy up type canopy is going to do any good.

Both of these sound like great options...Personally I've never had to use the stakes, but like Kmac said, I'm sure they'd pull right out in a good stiff wind.

I agree, but it'll suffice if it's a straight down rain. Personally, I'm working on getting a nice enclosed trailer with a generator so I can hook up A/C, fridge, TV and power my laptop.
Nice to dream... Have other things I need to take of first now. :(

Maybe I should just get a 10x20 tarp and attach one side to the cabin and the other to a couple 10' EMT poles roped out so the water can drain off.

I was in a 1.5 hour downpour last summer stuck under a 10x10 and for the most part it didn't collect water. Yes, some areas stretched and pooled a small amount, but nothing to cause any collapse. :dunno
Not something of choice, but then again for what it is it's not that bad.
It's gonna depend on how well the canopy fits.....the tighter the better. The last trackday at Barber my canopy survived torrential downpours for about 1 1/2 hrs, followed by steady rain for the next 2-3 hrs. However, a couple of my pit neighbors' canopies collapsed within 30 minutes. Others were going to collapse but as I was the only idiot sleeping at the track, I got up every 30 minutes and let the puddles out of everybody's canopies.
Anyone know a good cheap place to get those 10x10 canopy's?? I think we need more at our cabin.
Wal-Mart has been carrying one for 79 bucks. I haven't seen one opened up, but I may pick one up for Jennings in Feb.

Exactly, mine was still new enough that it needed to be stretched to fit. As stated, I'd prefer an enclosed trailer that I can use as a shelter as well. Sadly, that's a couple years off. Same with making it to the Gap now. :(

Kmac, what dates are you planning on? The entirety of the convention? If so, I'd like to meet up with you and ride together. Let me know bish!
Leader 09-25-2007, 09:22 AM I have only been a member a couple months now. Just happened to be up there last June when you guys were and that is how I found this place. Couple of questions.
I know it said prices will be posted soon, but approximately how much does it cost to book through you guys? Do you have to register for the whole week or can you do just a weekend? What might I miss if not there for the whole week? How many take families? I have a g/f with a teenage son that might go - is there enough for them to do since they don't ride?
Thanks,

Sadly, no I won't be able to make it unless something changes. My health insurance policy was rescinded, which makes me liable for a ton of medical bills and I've only seen half of them so far. On top of it, I'm still experiencing symptoms of what sidelined me from making it to the convention this year, as well as forcing me into retirement from competition.
Sadly, it seems as if it's becoming a reality that I won't ever make it to the convention. :(

If you go to www.fontanavillage.com and look up the rates... most will have an off season rate. We get that off season rate. A bunch of us are booked in a Magnolia cabin, So that will save us between $40-$50 a night if you include the taxes we would save per night. You can come for 1 day or 7 days. It's all up to you, but no matter what make sure you are there for the Big Yamaha dinner and giveaway on Saturday night. What will you miss... a bunch of awesome riding days (weekdays are the best days to ride) and all the BS'ing after dinner each night. Many members bring their families as there is plenty to do. Disc golf, putt-putt, 2 pools, lazy river, horseback riding, white water rafting, wave runners, video game arcade, hiking, bike riding, shuffleboard, ping-pong, horseshoes, tennis, basketball, etc etc. Most of these activities are free, others you need to pay for. A bunch of us are booked in a Magnolia cabin, So that will save us between $40-$50 a night if you include the taxes we would save per night. You can come for 1 day or 7 days. You know, I really was going to be there next year. I had everything planned out and was really looking forward to it, then heading off to Sweden for a few weeks. But, since my health insurance decided to cut and run leaving me with the responsibility of paying the doctor's bills, that killed all plans for the next two years. Including even just going away for a weekend with the wife to celebrate our 15th anniversary this year.
Believe me, I'd much rather go to the gap and at least triple the number of bikes in the garage with what I owe than to have to pay the bills my insurance company should have taken care of. :rant  :rant
Sorry for the rant, this just really pisses me off what they did and so far it seems like there isn't anything I can do about it. :rant :rant

Already maxed on hours I can bill my clients in a billing cycle, can't go any more or else I get into trouble. The work's there, they just won't pay more than I'm already doing for them.
I'm not really too worried about, as I've been in situations worse than this a couple of years ago. Just frustrating that as soon as things settle down, this happens.
Ah well. Gives me more time to plan for '09. :sneaky

If you're wanting in a cabin you need to pre-plan it with who you want to stay with. Most people stuff about 50% more people in their cabin than what it says it can hold; people on couches, air mattresses, etc.....keeps the individual costs down. For a room at the lodge, just reserve it......again, if you're gonna split it with somebody, set all of that up prior.
You reserve a cabin out of the several types available. For each type there may be 10 or 12 cabins available.....which one you get is pretty much luck of the draw unless you specifically request one early on. Don't even think about the cabins on Shuckstack road, those are reserved by now already.

By the time all was said and done, I came in (solo) at a little less than $1000. And that includes buying a set of tires (which I still haven't gotten around to mounting). Next year I'm bringing two bikes, so fuel will be more and I'll probably try to sleep less :) More time for riding.

No man! Keep putting money aside! I ride for donations as well :D
Coming from up there you'll run into a few more bucks in gas milage, plus you'll see tons of good roads that you may want to take a detour or make a stop for. Better safe than sorry. You can do it on a low budget, or get as extravagent as you wish. Most important thing is you do it. I met some of the best people in all my travels (and I've been around the block) at the convention.

Good people is whats its all about.
Thats damn good Dan!
Explorer got decent gas milage, and GAWarrior hooked me up with a pretty good deal on a place to stay (thanks Chad and bigpunr1!), and I only bought a few shirts and key chains, light lunch on the Sushi Run, and then Eric and Carol sold me a set of tires for a good price. Worked out pretty good for something I literally threw together in less than 48 hours. This year my bosses already know I'm taking that time off, and anything short of a Headquarter Marine Corps (who I work for) emergency is not stopping me. Heck, if Ned can be there everyday after his start this year, nothing will stop me from being there the first day. Let me know if you need me to tote some stuff. Trailer will be full, but I've got 80 plus square feet in the SUV.
Off topic: any openings at VIR between now and the trackday at Jennings? I haven't been on a track in years, and I need to at least go spectate and get my gear list straight. Did I PM you my phone numbers? I swear... I'm getting dumber as I learn more...

Pm me your numbers again. I cant remember if you sent them to me or not. I am doing Cornerspeed at VIR on Oct. 29th and 30th. Check with Cornerspeed.net for avaiable spaces. Would be cool if you can make it!

I made an early run one morning last year and had to stop near the state line for 2 turkeys in the road. I overheard them making cracks about getting ready so they could stuff Bogie again in the corner when he comes back through. :fact

See... I'm glad fjorn replied for me on that question. I don't swim recreationally much. Only in SCUBA or if someone is drowning (and only then if someone realizes I'm rescue certified and supposed to help).
