Hi guy's this is my first post want to find out if any one else has had a problem with the brakes fadding out on there 99? When they went the rear went first soon followed by the front. I was coming down a step winding road at the time. But the suzuki and the the 2 honda's with me had no troubles at all. Was the first time i have ridden on that style of road. Any advise would be a help thanks.:no

it is not common for these bikes, and I personally have never ever heard on someone experiancing brake fade with the front and rear at the same time.

Need to look at the brakes and see whats amiss. At the least you need a through flushing and bleeding with QUALITY brake fluid.

Ok since the last trip i have changed brake fluid to a good quality dot 5 fluid. But have not had the chance to test it out and its a littel scary when the brakes go in those conditions. Now i hear storys that the dot 5 fluid is not all its cracked up to be. So should i wast the $50 of dot5 and renew with dot 4 Befor i take the 5000km ride to phillip island and back? (Was hoping it was common and eazy to fix dam) oh and i am running sinted race pads does that make a differance

some brembo brake systems got problems with dot 5 .it kills the seals.
if i were u i would switch back to dot 4 , but thats just me.maybe other members know better.

if someone put DOT 5 in your bike, I would take it back and throw a HUGE fit!!

that fluid is not compatiable with the seals in the system.

DOT 5.1 IS comaptiable with your system.

there is a HUGE difference between DOT 5 and DOT 5.1.

Best bet is to use a DOT 4 fluid with the highest DRY and WET boiling points possible.

Some people only look at the dry boiling point, and that is a mistake. The WET boiling point is at least, if not MORE important.

DOT 5 is commonly used on Harleys as it does not harm paint, but it is not really suitable for high performance use.

Brake Fluid is EXTREMELY important!!! DO NOT over look it!! It needs to be changed at least yearly ( more if you are a track junkie, and it MUST be changed if you EVER experiance brake fade!!!)

:stpd: go punch the d!ckhead that sold you silicon dot 5. it is rubbish in a r1.:fact. change it for a good dot 4 as stated. motul rbf is reasonably priced. castrol sfr is what i use, but be sitting down when someone tells you how much it is.:lol. also better brake lines ( e.g braided steel) will help too. and you will need to thoroughly flush the dot5 crap out. note: THOROUGHLY!

SRF is roughly $70 per liter (think quart if you are american).

Great stuff, super expensive.

with stock pads, stock lines, and stock fluid these bikes don't get brake fade. Something is seriously wrong with your setup.

Ok cool sound like some good advise. Can get motul at local bike shop. Flushing brake lines do i just use the new fluid to flush old stuff out or is there some sort of flush liquid?

unfortunately, the two don't mix, so i dunno, maybe isopropyl alcohol might clean the lines? i'm not exactly sure what to use though. it has been discussed on this forum before though. try a search for the posts about it?

use only brake fluid to clean the brake system.
flush it 2 times with some cheap dot4 fluid ,thats all.

well i've read that only running dot 4 mixed in with the silicon dot 5 can cause contamination or a type of clotting that wont be all cleaned by just dribbling dot4 through the lines a few times? so if it were me i'd do a search on this forum because it has been discussed before. but for me i'd use a mild solvent and then compressed air through the lines. maybe a white spirit or metho or isopropyl alchohol (rubbing alcohol).
