I rode a friends 2002 TL1000R today.Nice looking bike but not alot of get up and go.Real sluggish throttle response and not very good handling characteristics.I had just come off my 954 so I guess its not really fair to compare the 2 but I personally did not like the TL.Also has horrible gas mileage. He goes on reserve after 85-95 miles.

A friend of mine has a '00 TLR that is heavily modified and I loved riding it (marchesini, full Yosh, ohlins everything, etc)
It had tons or torque for those effortless wheelies...and decent handling to boot. However, back to back comparisons to my '01 R1 left it feeling bloated and slow turning. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the TLR isn't a killer bike, it's just feels older and not as high-tech or flickable. Granted I rode a very trick bike and not the stock TLR. I'm certain that there would be a world of difference between the two.
Just my .02

I've got a buddy that has about the same set up but the thing vibrates like crazy! Nice for the chicks but hard on my wrists. It turns on a time but I don't care for the sound of the Vtwin.

Biff, personally I did like the TL I rode,I didnt mean to dog on it. It would be a great bike for longer rides. But when you compare the R1 to it its tough to judge it.Just my opinion though. He really likes his bike and thats whats important.

You're right. It is very difficult to judge either bike. They both perform the same tasks but with their own hit and miss style (I think the TL misses more...haha).
Apples and oranges?
To tell you the truth, I'm glad I have the opportunity to ride other machines so I can appreciate how good I've got it!
Cheers!
