Has anyone ever used this...will it be ok in my R1?? Fairly new to bikes, and would appreciate the advice.
MOTOREX 4T 5w50???soupjmpr 03-13-2008, 07:28 PM Has anyone ever used this...will it be ok in my R1?? Fairly new to bikes, and would appreciate the advice. Speed_Devil 03-13-2008, 07:40 PM The R1 owners manual states using 10W40. Personally, I would not stray from that. 50, IMO, seems a little heavy unless you are racing. Otherwise stick to 10W40. However, discussing oil is like discussing religion or politics! And welcome to the sight. soupjmpr 03-13-2008, 07:45 PM Thanks for the tip. My brother bought it for me and swears on it. He has a ZX6R though. Not sure if that matters. I hate to give it away because he spent $50 on a gallon jug, but I don't want to mess up my engine either. Racer Dude 03-15-2008, 12:08 AM I see your from FL. Simply buy a jug of 10w-40 of the same exact type and brand of oil and mix the two together 50/50. This will yield you a multi-weight of 7.5w-45 weight motor oil.
If you mix two equal parts of each jug, (5w-50 & 10w-40) 7.5w-45 is EXACTLY what you will get. This mixture will yield you a multi-weight that is a lot closer to factory spec. The 45 weight will be perfectly fine in the hot FL sun. Racer Dude 03-15-2008, 12:14 AM Edit above post:
If you really want to get close to 10w-40, you could alter the ratio in which you mix the oil. You could spread the gallon of 5w-50 out over 3 oil change intervals, and you would be really close to 10w-40.
Absolutely no need to throw the $hit out. CosmoK 03-15-2008, 12:36 PM Edit above post:

That's what I would do. soupjmpr 03-15-2008, 01:21 PM Thanks for the tips, I think I will buy another gallon of heavier oil and mix it. The shit's green so I dont know if I want to spread it out over oil changes with the existing oil Racer Dude 03-16-2008, 09:03 PM It's perfectly fine to mix multi-weights as long as they are the same exact brand and type. Simply just buy a gallon jug of Motorex 4T 10w-40, and use a one to three ratio. (one part 5w-50 for every two parts 10w-40) The mixture ratio is not critical, and does not have to be perfect, as your just mixing multi-weights together.
Like I said, all that matters is that you mix the same brand and type of oil, as it is perfectly fine to mix multi-weights that are of the same type of oil. By mixing 10w-40 with the 5w-50 that you currently have, you would be essentially narrowing the viscosity range of the 5w-50. (5 is too low, 50 is too high)
Your gallon jug of 5w-50 should yield you about 3 oil changes when mixed with 10w-40 utilizing this ratio. | |
