Oh crap - Tenn. cops are funded this year.

From Tail of the Dragon (http://www.tailofthedragon.com/) TAIL OF THE DRAGON EXCLUSIVE ? The State of Tennessee is spending more than $200,000 of taxpayer?s money to add overtime patrols at the Dragon this summer. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is receiving a $75,000 grant and the Blount County Sherriff Office is receiving $125,000. These grants will last through the summer and end on September 30, 2008. Maybe this will be a good year to check out the other roads. Hope it's not too bad.

Guess i cant bring my Girl w/ me! http://media3.guzer.com/pictures/motorcycle_thong_cop.jpg Well, last year (after the 2007 convention), they maintained their gestapo on the Dragon and no other roads. Best bet is just to keep it slow for your first run and be on the lookout for the "helmet tap" from other riders. If it's bad, well, there are plenty of other great roads to ride. And if you want... I'll babysit your gal for ya. :fact:

Yup, I'd be willing to bet that there are more reasons than bad schools and a family to the sale of the resort.... That's a good point... WTF is going on here anyways? I mean, who is this really benefiting? Obviously the local businesses don't want to lose their customers, and as far as I know, they're making a lot of money from the motorcycle crowds. Are the other paying customers complaining? Is it strictly political? Anyone know anything about the blount county politics that can chime in?

I'll bet money it's locals. They use that road (and others) to travel daily and are probably sick and tired of the bikes coming at them, around them, etc. 2 Years ago I got pulled over on the way into Robbinsville because a local called me in because I passed him and a line of cars. Cop was gonna ring me up, too, when the front vehicle (a tree trimming truck) drove past. Cop flagged him down, asked him their side of the story and they corroborated mine: that I did NOT cross the double yellow while passing, and that the guy who called me in had been weaving in and out of his lane to prevent others from passing. Cop let me go. It's not hard to tell that a lot of the locals despise the bike activity....and with what I've seen from Harley and sport bike guys combined, I can't say that I blame them. It's funny how everybody preaches it's NOT a race track and to ride your own pace, yet most go up there and tear it up like there's no tomorrow. I'm not preaching against going fast and having some fun, but I understand why people would be upset.

I had a situation happen when I was stationed in Idaho for nuke training. The locals got very "pissy" with the navy presence there and started ripping us off, cops were targeting out of state cars with base stickers, shit like that. After enough complaints the base CO had a special pay day and we all got paid in $2 bills. After a 2 weeks of this he put an ad on the local TV station and asked all the local business and citizens to count the number of $2 bills they had and then told them it was all from the military there and if they wanted it to continue to start treating us better. It worked. If we make enough of a statement to the local PD, city, county and state reps about how much money we bring in there they may back off. If not, we find another road. Hell, Fontana should be bitching to the local council about harassing us.

you ride the place within the law and you want have any troubles and will still have a ton of fun....I would be willing to be 95% of the people that go up there can't even ride the posted MPH through the turns. It is from turn to turn that people are getting themselves in trouble and hurt. The place is beautiful, you get to ride with friends all day long, hang out together in the evenings and wake up and do it all over again the next day. No matter what cops etc are up there that is still great stuff!

The NC Troopers haven't committed to an assault on bikes, but they do harass. Bigpunr1 (Al) and I were heading back to Fontana from running the Robbinsville loop, and just outside of Robbinsville we picked up a NC Trooper who followed us all the way to 28, took a left with us, followed for another few miles and then flipped a crazy U-turn in the middle of the road. The whole time we were doing like 54 mph :lol.

last year i had several groups of harleys block me from passing on the road from fonatana to the crossroads while they moved along at 15-20 mph. i thought it was very rude and kinda dangerous since they went to the point of completely blocking the oncoming lane, and all i was doing was 40-45. i didnt try passing at all on the dragon itself though i did let quite a few people pass me heh. and j, thats a great video, i have seen short parts of it before but never heard the commentary from the filmers, thats great why would the riders beat the cagers arse for the riders own stupidity lol.
