I have a big jug of Mobil 1 5w50. Is this weight OK for my 2001 R1? It is NOT energy conserving / NO friction modifiers. I have used 15w50 in the past (red cap) with good success. Just wondering if the 5w50 is OK for these bikes. I searched but no one seems to talk about 5w50, all discussed is about 15w50, which I can no longer find in stores here. TIA!

Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10W 40 is what I use on my 06. It's motorcycle specific oil w/out the additives, energy conserving garb...google it and get the low down.

Neither the 15w50 or the 5w50 have energy conserving garb, and they're both way cheaper than the bike oils. Not trying to start another car vs bike oil thread, just wondering if anyone has experience or specific knowledge if the 5w50 works well in the One. Think maybe the spread from 5 to 50 is too wide? Or no?

Me and my friend run rotella 5w40. Me in my r6, and him in his r1 with no problems. So I think it would be fine as long as it doesn't have energy conserving stuff like you said. I wouldn't worry about it going to 50w.

Of course it is, just use it m8, I assume you have a stock 5jj (2001) motor right? Just dont forget to put a new oil fiter, and remember its not the same with older 4XVs! Regards,

I'm just gonna use it. Sounds like the 15w50 will be available again by my next oil change. Thanks for the opinions :thumbup

Or no? I wouldn't use any oil that is 15w-50 and especially 5w-50. The bigger the gap in the number (5w-50) the more polymers you have in the oil. Polymers are good yes...but too many are not. Basically polymers help the oil change viscosities. It is what makes the oil go from thick to thin and back to thick again. They are the backbone behind multi-weight oil but too many will actually prevent the oil from doing its job over time. Stick with 5w-40,10w-40 or 15w-40. Yes you could use just about any weight oil and be fine if you changed your oil every 3K but there is no reason to run a 5w-50 or 15w50 oil.
