Speed_Devil 04-21-2008, 07:16 PM Welcome to the Forum. No one ever went wrong with 10w40. yankin&bankin 02-16-2009, 01:32 AM Question for the Amsoil guys:
Does Amsoil use exclusively Group III, Group IV, Group V, or some combination of all three as base stock?
Does Amsoil use the same base stock for all its oils?
Or does Amsoil use a Group III for one oil, Group IV for another, etc., or a combination of two or more groups in one oil?
I know that manufacturers are allowed to claim full synthetic in the US even if their oil is based on Group III...thanks to Mobil 1 & Castrol duking it out in court after Castrol started claiming that Syntec was full-synth even though it was based on Group III.... Correct on the Hydro Cracks being able to call themselve Synthetic... Castrol, Mobil and MANY others use the Fully Synthetic Term quite well now.
If we are staying with the MotorCycle Oils... PAO with Esters... (group IV and V) A pure PAO Base oil does not have the "Cling". The Addition of Esters Polarize the oil so it "Clings" to the metal surfaces and Esters are also Superior Cleaning agents. PAO with Esters are considered to be the best oils at this time.
AMSOIL does have some Hydro-Cracked oils. These are the XL line for cars and are NOT to be used in MotorCycles. They also have a Diesel Blend which may be elimnated soon.
Although Most AMSOIL Products are PAO Products, even AMSOIL is trying to steer us away from using certain terms and %'s of Base Stock and concentrate more on the performance of the oil itself..
Not because they are trying to hide anything but, you never know what the next "Greatest Oil" will be. Will it be the Exotic Synthetics they are experimenting with ? Or, will someone come up with something that will so greatly improve Petroleum oils ?
Right now, Nothing outperforms PAO w/Ester in Most cases.

This is exactly the line Mobil is taking in response to questions on their website relating to the formulation of their oil. They won't confirm which Group their oil is based on, and do not deny that it uses Group III Base Stock.
Here is a typical question along with their answer from their website:
Question:
Response to Claims that Products Contain 'Mostly Mineral Oil' I've seen claims of gas chromatograph analysis of Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W-30 SM dated 10-06 that state it is "mostly mineral oil". Realizing that you cannot divulge your exact formulations, what do you say to the critics that claim you are using a high percentage of hydro processed mineral oil in Mobil 1 instead of the more expensive PAO or polyester base stocks? -- Jeff Willett, St. Peters, MOhttp://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/images/spacer.gif
Answer:
Just like other companies, we do not discuss our product formulations for obvious proprietary reasons. Mobil 1 Extended Performance is formulated using a combination of high performance fluids including PAO, along with a proprietary system of performance additives. But in the end, it is also about performance. Mobil 1 is used by more Original Equipment Manufacturers than any other oil as factory fill in their vehicles. Also take note of the kind of testing we put our product through, including the Las Vegas field testing (http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Synthetics/Product_Testing_Las_Vegas.aspx) we recently completed. The Mobil 1 technology is also tested each weekend on the race track. In fact, more than 50 percent of all NASCAR teams use Mobil 1.Mobil's failure to deny the use of Group III Base Stock would seem to indicate that it is true, especially since, years ago, before the Castrol lawsuit, they used to heavily advertise Mobil 1 as being based on Group IV (PAO).

I have no doubt Amsoil is good stuff but I've been running Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 in my R1 for years and it performs very very well. Just changed it last week, the shifting is super smooth and the R1 is still getting almost 50 miles/Gallon(freeway commute) and that's corrected miles with a Black Box. About $19/Gallon at Walmart and change it every 4,000 miles.

AMSOIL's MCT, MCF and MCV MotorCycle oils are 100% Synthetic utilizing PAO w/Esters for the Base Stocks and the rest is in Additives.
There is a lot going on right now in the Industry with some of the big oil companies. I have some information but, as of yet, have not had the time since I acquired it this past weekend, to go through it. Some of it pertains to Mobil 1 and what is going on with their formulation.
I have personally spoken with a Tech at a Prominent Lab and they are showing that M-1 is not testing as it should, but they were Very surprised at how one of the AMSOIL SSO is performing in a Specific Application where the OEM is having Severe Fuel Dilution Problems.. This is an automotive App.
Yes, Mobil is the leader in OEM oil... They practically give the oil to the OEM's, pay for a good part of the Liturature printing and for the oil caps. they make it up in sales afterwards.
AMSOIL is knocking on Mobil 1's door right now for automotive without the OEM Sales and AMSOIL is the Largest Manufacturer of Synthetic MotorCycle oils.
People that say "I've used this oil for XX years and never had a problem" also need to understand that the oil they bought just 2 years ago is not the oil they are buying today in most cases.

Actually, tests have shown otherwise and Group V oils can have some problems of their own.
The best performing oils for an automotive type application right now are PAO w/Esters. This includes MotorCycles. Please take a look at the G-2156 Link in our Sig.

Not saying Rotella T (actually is not a Synthetic) is a bad oil. A lot of Bikers use it with reasonable results.
I always say: reasonable results can be had by using a Good Petroleum oil and a Good filter. Superior results can be had by using a Premium Synthetic and a Premium Filter.
Also: Regardless of Brand, Synthetic or Petroleum, I always recommend the use of a MotorCycle Specific oil with a JASO Rating of MA, better yet, MA-2, but never MB
There is a Difference between Auto/Diesel oils and M/C oils.

That is why I am such a proponent of oil analysis. Chances are if all you did was change the oil, you may not know there is a problem until you are stranded, or worse, have a puked engine.

Would like to take a look at your last sentence. "Could I use that in my R1 with good results?".
Then, take a look at your second sentence. "This oil, that oil blah blah if you are changing you oil and filter when you should be any modern cycle oil is up to the task."
As you say, any modern cycle oil should be up to the task... Right ? But, then you ask if it is OK...
Also, Mobil 1 does not make an Ester Based oil..
Now that is out of the way... Take a look at your owners manual to see if you can use a 10W-30 and for the climate and riding conditions you have.

Also does the 25,000 mi interval apply to cycle oil?

my buddy has been bragging it up. He just purchased a case. about 3$ more per qt than amsoil. JEEZ
