BlackedoutR1 04-26-2008, 04:55 PM hay guys.. i found a place around my house that sells 100 octane unleaded.. i was thinkin bout runnin it in the bike.. just thought id ask if u guys suggest it or what?.. i kno in cars u need 2 change the tune of the car to get the full affect of the race gas.. is it the same as bikes? or would it start messin up internals? thnx guys

quick lesson on how octane/fuel works
The higher the octane number, the slower the burn, so theoretical by going to a higher number octane could see a loss of power from a incomplete burn from the point of ignition. As the piston travels up on the compression stroke, at a certain time you want the spark to ignite the fuel forcing the piston back down, if the fuel is fully ignited its not making you power. By running too low octane, as the piston is coming up, the gas will ignite from being compressed which usually destroys rod bearing first.
You want to run the lowest possible octane without preignition to get the most power.
Now a true race gas(not that 100 octane your buying at the pump) will be oxginated, which changes the rules, VP race fuels has a 89 octane that will add as much as 10% power with a proper tune.
If you could advance your timing then you ,might be able to see a slight advantage to that 100 octane, but IMO not worth teh time or money.
Mr Vo 04-26-2008, 09:07 PM so can I just use the regular 87 gas at the gas pump? Just curious. Because I have been using the 91 and 93 for years and I have never pay attention to that.
Thanks so much.

as long as your not detonating, then yes....to be honest, my bike (03 R1) detonates with 89, yet many others dont, why I cant tell you, but I run the 93 in my tank

only if its pinging.....I wonder if in different parts of the country we get different fuels, Ive tried 89 in my bike twice and could here it pinging, yet many others that I trust say that they dont get ping from 89 where they live, Wheat is one of those I would trust being able to hear ping!

CosmoK 04-27-2008, 06:12 PM Must be nice. I have one but feel guilty using it on my bike.
Mr Vo 04-27-2008, 09:11 PM Well, I think we complain too much about our gas prices in the states, but seriously, I think we have the cheapest gas prices in the world. I have been to other countries and hell their gas prices are so much higher. I think Canada gas prices are crazy high too.
SILV 04 R1 04-28-2008, 03:48 PM Doesnt the manuel indicate that you should run 93 octane or higher, i could have swore thats what the sticker that everyone first takes off when they buy a bike, That little yellow and white rectangular on the gas tank i think says that it should be 93 or higher. As for the 100 octane. I notice a difference in my bike. When i put the 100 octane in my bike it runs like its on crack, its more responsive and i love it, only downfall is its 7.40 a gallon, its listed as race fuel so i dont know if its oxyginated, if any one wants to do research on it its Sunoco cam2 100 octain race fuel. If its oxygynated please let me know as that would be great to know and it will make me feel a lil bit better bout spended 7.40 a gallon, luckily my bike only holds 4 gallons.....
xdonniedarkox 04-28-2008, 09:13 PM Compression and ignition timing are relevant here. I wont lie I used to get 102 from a 76 station that offered it. Did make the throttle response seem sharper, but then it was 4.99$ which seems almost cheap now :lol
I was told it will soot the piton heads too with carbon. I run 91 premium as recommended by Yamaha...

if your getting it out of a tank from in the ground its not gonna be oxygeninated, those fuels dont last long and they are usualy corrosive to tanks/fuel systems, thats why you have to drain race fuel after the races
SILV 04 R1 04-30-2008, 05:14 PM well its a pump all by its self and when you turn the pump on it sounds like you turned on a compressor when it starts pumpen. Not sure how gas is oxygenated, but at the price of 7.40 a gallon i cant afford toconstintly use that type of fuel.
Predator04 05-09-2008, 01:53 AM When you get a custom tune specifically for say the 100 pump octane you will make more power because you are able to take advantage of the relatively high compression ratio of our scooters as compared to say a car. The japs have to pull most of the usefull timeing out of our computers so as to avoid detonation on low octane pump gas. On my race bike I run the oxygenated leaded stuff and a TON of timeing.

1longR1 05-16-2008, 01:39 PM bikes dont have high compression compared to car. its compression ratio is sure, but its light weight parts and can run more effeciently on lower octane. 100 is not bad. u start putting 110 or higher and ur bike will loose 10-20 hp. adding fuel alone wont help. u need to add more timing or have higher compression to run high octane stuff. not stock now, something like 13.5 :1 or higher. i have set of 13.5:1 pistons in my bike and run 87 octane with them. seen bikes all stock at track put in race fuel.. and loose 1-3 seconds in there times. i did it 15 years ago with gsxr600. added fresh 105 octane howell fuel, bike wouldnt pull past 10k rpms and went from running low 11's to 12.0s. dumped fuel out there at track, went to gas station with just fuel tank off bike, added 5 gallons regular and bam next pass bike ran 11.17. run what u want..but ur just wasting $$$ doing it and loosing power.

I have heard this approach before... So 1long you are saying if I cop 87 in the tank would yield better performance? Secondly if I try it what would be the negative result. Sooting of cylinders (example), or something? I'm not tripping on trying it, just would like to hear your response. Lastly, I'm in no need of bigger pulls, bikes pulls plenny fast. Just your explanation mean Im wasting $. Thanks...
bardull 05-31-2008, 10:51 AM Hi,i am from Greece.I use 100 gas sometimes, mostly when i am going for a trip.I have not see better performance but i have see economy to fuel. Not big deference anyway.
