180 or 190?

Hey so as a brand new R1 owner, I was wondering what size tires you run. I know 190 came stock and that's what it has on it now, but a lot of people I know run 180 instead (not R1s). It has an off brand tire with half tread on the back now so I will probably go ahead and replace them both with either corsa 3s or Pilot Powers.

I ran a 180 on my '03 R1 for years. I like the quicker turn in on the track. Now, the 190/55 is easy to get ahold of instead of the regular 190/50. I'd go with the 190/55 if it were me.

I put 40k miles on my 02 R1. I have 7k miles so far on my 06 R1. I have NEVER ran a 180 tire til about 1000 miles ago. I didn't notice a big enough turn in gain (coming from PP 190's) and I hate the look. I'm no squid, poser type.....but I don't like the 170 series look that the Dunlop 180 I have on now....gives. my .02 I'd go 190/55

K. You guys have convinced me. I really didn't know so it looks like I'll be sticking with the 190s.

180's are not supposed to be on the r1. Go with 190/55

I liked the 180 on my 2003, the handling was great. I have a left over 180 that I will probably use on my 2008.

Is one tire taller then the other? Anything else different between them other then width? This is for ex. pilot power 180/55 VS 190/50? I went with the 180 cause it was $160 out the door, the 190 was going to be $230....

Ron Ayers has tires pretty cheap, and they are a forum sponsor. I think the 180 is taller, or at least it has a taller profile in relation to the width. The 180 should improve turning and it's cheaper.

180 is the width of the tread. The aspect ratio determines sidewall height. A 180/55 is slightly taller than a 190/50. The 190/55 will be a little taller than the previous two. Listen to Skeeter. 190/55 will likely be the best all around tire for track or serious cornering. I'm using up the last of my 180/55s and switching. I am off the edge of the tire and would like a little more.

? What about gearing and clearance (rear hugger) will switching to a 190/55 have any effect as far as fit or gearing might be a dumb ? but I'm new to this. Thanks:)

Thanks:) It will raise the final gear ratio minimally. Smaller than a tooth on the rear would change it. But good question. It does start to add up when using race slicks at 195/70 and such.

Ok cool thanx what about street riding will it clear the rear hugger? The 190/55 will in most cases. If you have a 16 tooth front sprocket you should have even more room.
