I was just in the process of doing the first oil change on my 08 R1 and found that the factory had overtightened the oil drain bolt and stripped the pan..now since I was doing the work, there is no warranty! So..i'm probably going to have the pan replaced, but i was wondering for those who have used rubber oil drain plugs before, how do they work and where can i buy one? And are they easy to remove? Thanks for ur help.

Changing your own oil doesn't void the warranty.

Never heard of factory error like this but ....they do offer drain plugs that are made for stripped threads ...automotive apllications and are a pain in the as long term....New oil pan...best thing....

Very true..but, if there is a problem like a stripped oil pan which would occur because of overtightening, its kinda hard to convince them that it wasn't me that caused the damage.

if your stuck without the dealer eating it, DO NOT USE THE RUBBER PLUGS!!!
i cant stress this enough. they tear and puke oil everywhere. i am an auto mechanic and have seen countless cars lose them.
if you dont want to change the pan, figure out what the thread diameter is and go to an autoparts store and ask for that size+1 oversize (i.e. 14mm +1) dont ask for a 15, you have to ask for an oversize.
hope this helps, and good luck.

Knowing torque settings and using them is good too...

The same thing happened to my friends brand new r6, I went to the dealer brought the stripped threads, told them it happened on the way out, and your production line overtorqued the bolt. They redrilled a bigger hole in the pan and my buddy paid nothing

get a helicoil from you auto shop, drill it then dap it and you will still be able to use the same drain plug, just take the drain plug to the auto shop and tell it needs to be this thread pitch. trust me i do it every day on alum. heads holds strong
