I bought a used '99 R1 about a year ago with about 19k miles on it. I live in raleigh, nc and the temperatures during the summers can range from the 70's to the upper 80's. During the winter, it ranges from about the 30's to the 40's. This will be my first oil change that I will personally be doing to my bike. I went to a local bike shop and they sold me some "Castrol Actevo X-tra 4T SAE 20W-50 Part Synthetic Oil". What oil do you guys suggest that I get? Should I go with a full synthetic as opposed to this part synthetic that they sold me?

Run what you like, just change it regularly.

20w-50, in my opinion, isn't good to run in the winter (unless it is FULL synthetic).

That's what I'm running in my '07. It's good oil. Whatever you run, just be sure to change it often, and you won't have a problem.

All good suggestions... change frequently. Here are some that I personally think highly of: Shell RotellaT full synthetic (blue bottle) 5W-40 Respol full synthetic Amsoil MCF full synthetic MOTUL full synthetic

Do you feel the Amsoil is better than the Respol? If so, can you justify that? Jim

Do you feel the Amsoil is better than the Respol? If so, can you justify that? Jim I have seen test sheets between those to oils from an outside source for one being that i work with bikes....now honestly i will say i have never used repsol but i have heard something about it from being in the buisness not just hear say off of the street,,,,and I can tell u this i will never use repsol because i have absolutely no need i have seen the perfomance of amsoil under the most extreme conditions in the most extreme bikes....its proven itself to me over and over

Well... I'm not a Respol guy - but I think that those who do use it are going to tell you hown much better it shifts, how much quieter their bikes run (and cooler), and that it is the highest quality 100% synthetic. I'm not defending (or praising) anyone (or oil) here... just trying to make a point that there are a group of oils that all do a stellar job. Most of us defend what we use because it's just natural to do so (otherwise we are saying that we don't use the best). I doubt that any of us can really tell the difference, but I'm going to keep an open mind and try more of these top brands. Maybe I'll switch because I really do find something significantly better.... Jim

I agree with u to an extint but i havent tried other oils but i have seen the insides of engines that have used other oils....so i am speaking from a protection stand point now as for quick shifting and all that i havent really noticed a difference in the top oils as far as that goes,...because i deal with most drag racing bikes and we use air shifter so its gonna shift regardless ...
