I have done the same with a Honda Civic oil filter on my Triumph to save $ and it worked perfectly but you have to make sure all the specs match or you will starve your engine of oil if the valving is too restrictive in the Toyota filter!
On the R1 the oil filter circular surface where it mates-up to the engine is 53mm inner diameter and 69mm outer diameter and uses an 20mm through bolt!
As long as there specs match-up and you have verified and matched-up the oil filter valving of the R1 and Toyota filter you are fine!
Unfortunately you will have to dig into Google or contact the respective manufacturers to obtain the correct valving specs. aaron_mahnken 10-05-2008, 03:09 PM Motorcycle Oil Filter cross reference (http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/FilterXRef.html).
