Hey all,
I changed my oil last night and I tried to fill it up to the line but I'm having a hard time discerning if it's at or above the max line. I can never tell if the bike is straight. I think the oil is about 2-3 mm above the max line. But I don't know at what temp. to measure my oil. I think that as the oil gets hotter it seems to reach higher in the window (similar to the car dip stick where the hot oil level is above the cold oil level).
My question is, what damage will be done by slightly overfilling? Will the oil light turn on if it's overfilled too much? Is it worth it to drain some out and get it to mid point between min/max? At what temperature should I measure the oil? The manual says 'run the bike for several minutes, then let it sit for several minutes". What the heck is several minutes?
Thanks all for your opinions/advice!

I have always run mine a little above the top mark.
The top line is a conservative estimate of maximum.
It will be fine.

just go for a quick 15-20 kms ride, that should get it up to temp. If your worried about the oil why dont you just remove abit?

How can I remove just a bit? If I open the drain plug it'll come pouring out. I tried sucking it out from where I put it in (with a series of straws) but I couldn't reach the oil. Any ideas?

Did the same thing not long ago. I unsrewed the drain plug to the point just before removing it where it could slowly leak out just enough oil.
Good luck.

I tend not to overfill it and get either on the max line or just below it. I believe that overfilling will cause the seals to blow due to too much pressure, but at what level of overfilling....probably quite a bit overfilled, but who knows. I'll just play it safe and have my oil level between the min/max lines.

Storm, thanks for that info. I was wondering if that would happen if I unscrewed it that way, I might try it.
Thanks to everyone else for your replies as well:)
Just make sure the oil is totally cool when draining a tad or well find out like the rest of us what happens :)

Loosen your oil filter, that will make the oil drop a little. You will need to run the bike before you will be able to see the changes in the site glass.

Did the same thing. Noticed oil on some hoses underneath the bike and by the kick stand. Going to drain a bit and see what happens.

You must have put way too much in for it to come out like that.

I drained some off today and did not notice anymore leaks. I think I put in 3.9 instead if the recommended 3.1
