Hey guys, I've been wondering about this for a while so I'm going to ask...

I'm going to be visiting the States around that time and am wondering if I should extend my trip a little if I can to try spend a few days there to get a few days of the gathering in.. Bear in mind, being from Aussieland I won't be able to bring my bike. :(

Is this event friendly to someone who can't bring their bike?

OK... Dinner numbers are locked (more or less). I am submitting our numbers. We are still taking shirt orders. We are only having the shirts that are pre-ordered printed, so plan ahead and get a shirt. They will not be available after the Convention. I have responded to everyone who ordered a shirt or paid for food to confirm I recorded what they wanted.

If you wanted in on the dinners but did not get to take care of it yet, PM me as soon as you possibly can. I will see what I can work out.

MOST IMPORTANT: From the remaining folks who are on the list and not marked as paid; WE NEED TO HEAR FROM EVERYONE WHO WILL ATTEND SATURDAY NIGHT'S YAMAHA PROVIDED DINNER. I have to get accurate numbers to Shane to provide to Yamaha for the dinner, and Fontana as well so an accurate number of meals can be prepared.

If you have any questions concerning the list, food payment, shirt payment, or Saturday Dinner, please PM me and I will get you an answer.

Have you entertained the splitting a cabin option? I'm sure there are a couple of folks that have cabins that wouldn't mind splitting the cost with you... It would definitely put you closer to everyone and then you wouldn't have to travel down the hill every night.

This isn't a first timer talking smack is it? I recall some noob from Kentucky talking smack about this time last year before the 08 convention. If I remember correctly, after he was pulled from his puddle of puke, he had to be carried to a couch after a night of alcohol poisoning. :lol

Oh B'eater, just wait until you meet the Mix Masta. I am just going to apologize now. Because it may hurt a bit.

The Trout Pond will be stocked on Friday, 29 May. For those interested in fishing the Trout Pond, equipment/bait is available from Fontana.

Might be a good thing to for those with children to occupy some time.

Yea, we need plenty of locals! It's fun to pass you guys! :flex: You're so slow! :hammer::hammer:

Funny tidbit for all. A few of us mad a fall trip to the gap this past fall. Greg (realmccoy) being one of them. The weather was horrid. Rainy. Cold. Nasty slimy leaves everywhere. Not much bike riding being done. (we did manage to drain about 12 bottle of vodka and associated mixers and some beer to. . .this was a 2 night trip with about a dozen people.

So hear we are packed up and leaving. Greg goes blasting out the Gap in true local style. We saw him for about 1/2 of a curve. so we are trekking across the dragon. Someone who shall rename nameless was busy puking in a Gatorade bottle due to mass alcohol consumption from the night before (actually earlier that morning, about 2 or 3am). (hangovers and curves are bad together)

So we stop on a pull off so the guy in the Tahoe can puke. Greg comes back saying, man you all should unload and make a couple passes. Its not bad once you get used to stepping it out in every corner. LMAO. Locals. Y'all are crazy.

Oh I think you need to look around. I did not rat anyone out nor have a talked any trash this year. :flex: :hammer:

But I do hope you enjoy the newb list. . . .:hammer::hammer:

Oh the Next day I was fine. I was up at 530 walking to my cabin. Took a shower rode into Robbinsville at 630 for breakfast at McD's.

I guess when you pass out BEFORE DARK, 530 is not really that early though. :lol

If Dan and I are stayin' on the NEWB LIST, then there will most definitely be a second list drawn up.... maybe we'll call in the Convention SOPHOMORE list, either way, you'll pay FAR WORSE than we will when it's all said and done. :lol:lol:lol (kinda like last year)

I experienced that same thing back in 05 when I was the NEWB, don't need to go through it again (at least not until Thursday) :lol:lol:lol Not only did they get me JACKED UP, then they LAUGHED at me when Ginger came skippin' down the hill to "remind" of a certain anniversary I forgot about.

Yeah Stu, it was your "StuShine" talk about the hair of the dog. It all started when Shane gave me a few beers early Sunday afternoon.

Shane: Skeeter, dude look what the FZ1 guys left in my fridge. Here, down a few of them.

Skeeter: Um, it's a little early, but what the hell, I'm on vacation.

I should have seen the writing on the wall. Shane was still in the mastering stages of his "MixMaster Skills" I was the target. I'm sure a few of the originals had a few things to do with it too. Damn, I was drinking those orange sobe vodka things, beer, stushine and someones Irish Whiskey. What a year it was. :beer

You can bet I will have a couple nights of extreme alcohol poisoning. But this year it WONT be on a stomach with like 2 pieces of BBQ chicken alone. :fact

Besides, I re-newb'ed this past fall on Shane's BDay weekend at the gap. OMG, we drank SOOOO much vodka. SOME Smack talka SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE. *ahemcoughstucoughchoke* Women. . . EVERYWHERE. . .young, firm, drunk. . .

KA's and some other frat from Wake Forrest go to fontanna every year and invite a bunch of sorrority chicks. Most of them hung with us. Eventually young, dumb and full of testosterone got the best of them and the "men" started getting frustrated at our pimpin abilities. :fact

It's almost that time. The smack talk has begun, ride routes being picked, friends waiting to see one another again. So I thought it's about time to bring up safety during the Convention.

Deals Gap and the roads surrounding that area are challenging, scenic, and to be blunt DANGEROUS. Every year people flock to the region to "Conquer the Dragon," and unfortunately many don't succeed. Thus we have the increased law enforcement presence that we've seen.

A couple of things that have been posted and discussed:

Know your limits and respect them - There is ALWAYS someone faster. That doesn't mean to push beyond your means to the point someone gets hurt. No umbrella girls, checkered flags or trophies at the end of this. Just you and your machine in the condition you came in. That's the prize.

Local riders - These folks run those roads ALL THE TIME. They can be whicked fast, and sometimes impatient. Don't get into a testosterone fueled contest with them. Let them get on their way. Remember: you and your machine in the condition you came in.

Slow passes - If you've never been there, or hell, even if you have, run a few slow passes to see what is up. Road conditions will change through the course of the day. People will paint warnings on the road. It's a good idea to heed them since they usually mean oil or something else on the road.

Make passes with someone familiar - This is easy. A lot of us have been there before. Find someone who has been there and take a slow pass with them. If you have questions, stop and ask. Stop in a safe area and watch some of the more familiar riders come through and see what they are doing.

The photo whores - You won't have any trouble finding these guys. They will be out in force going through familiar corners with photographers clicking away as they drag knee, making it look entirely too easy. Don't be fooled. Even though they make it look easy, it takes work. Especially at the low speeds they can do this at (I watched knee dragging taking place at 37 mph, radar confirmed last year). Getting a picture with your knee down is cool, but if you aren't a constant knee dragger don't try to force it. A picture of you in good form riding a good line is much better than sending your bike into the woods.

Make a promise - As silly and trivial as it may sound, when you pair up with other riders for the day promise not to be the reason for something going wrong. At the end of the day we want everyone back on Shuckstack comparing stories and laughing about the good times. At the end of the week we want everyone going home with their bikes as good as they arrived having made friends.

Take care...
Dan
