What if 1st oil change was at 2,700 mi?

It's kind of a long story on how I ended up buying my '05 R1, but I now have reason to believe the previous owner never did the 600 mi oil change. He purchased the bike new in Aug 05 from a dealership A (dealership A confirmed it). He told me he never worked on the bike himself and had all service done at dealership B including the 600 mi service. I called dealership B and every other dealership in the area and nobody has any service records under his name or VIN. I just had a feeling that he was wasn't telling me the truth, combined with the fact that he wasn't able to provide any service records, he told me he hasn't ridden the bike in a year, the oil was unusually dark, AND when I removed the oil filter it was screwed on ridiculously tight (like it was the factory oil filter). So anyways my question is this: How much should I worry about this? I'm PISSED right now just thinking that someone could be so irresponsible and not get the oil changed after break in. I know what probably matters the most is how he rode the bike and I believe he rode it responsibly and did not trash the bike. But my question is, what are the chances that irreversible engine damage has already occured? I still have the oil and the oil filter, if I send them to a lab would they be able to tell me if the oil had ever been changed, by analyzing the amount of shavings in the oil or the filter possibly? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks. Lesson learned: When in doubt, always confirm service history BEFORE purchasing.

I ain't no expert but you probably don't have anything to worry about. Change the oil, forget about it and ride. Mark 99 R1

Sending the sample(s) to a lab could confirm alot - but I don't think they would tell you the engine is trashed. I agree with Sharksawer - change it and move on. I doubt there was damage done. But obviously not the best (or right) practice to begin with... Jim

Cool thanks guys. Yeah as soon as I got it home I did the fiveoh style oil change and refilled with Amsoil 10W-40 synthetic. If the lab results reveal something noteworthy I'll post it up.

It is fine. Drain the old stuff, spin on a new filter, fill with your choice of a quality lube, and ride. If you're really worried, go for a ride, then change the oil again.

I would drain it, change oil/filter and ride it, if it's running fine you will more then likely be ok...I would be a little pissed, but at least it had oil... I would run it with a new yamaha filter and regular dino 10w-40 for 500-600 miles, and then change oil and filter again.....
