I just love them for their style, reliability and performance, and I just can never bring myself to ride any other make. Anyway, when my youngest son Ian (4th year at Northeastern Univ. - Boston) decided he wanted to get a bike, I stepped in and offered him my 2006 Yamaha FZ6 (which I had bought as a commuter bike with gas mileage as a major deciding factor - and it didn't hurt that it looked pretty nice too). The FZ6 is relatively tame and forgiving, so I think it makes a good 1st bike for him. So knowing I was going to no longer have that bike, I decided to move up and find a really nice 07 R1 (pref. Blue). I've always loved the R1 styling (and was very tempted to buy it when I bought the FZ6 - but practicality and reason prevailed). After a couple of weeks of searching on Craigslist and local finds, I found this forum and decided to look here for a Blue R1 Swatskeb's 2007 Blue R1 for sale thread (http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=231435). I came very close to closing that deal with Swatskeb - but at the 11th hour, he balked and now I'm really happy he did! As I was disappointed at the time and there were no other 07's that I wanted, I posted a question on the forum about purchase comparison of the 04-06 series vs the newer 07-08 Link to thread here (http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=232567). In short, as I looked closer I found that I was much more attracted to the styling of the 04-06 series than the 07-08, and I knew that while I would be giving some things up (like slipper clutch, variable stack height, etc.), I could easily make up for that in MODs and probably get a better deal financially. It was just at that time that Mike (Badcyllo) contacted me about his 04 Blue R1 he had for sale Badcyllo's 04 Blue R1 for sale thread (http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=232511). Well... I've since fallen in love with this particular R1, and I've caught the MOD bug (who hasn't here). So here I am with a big shit-eatin' grin from ear-to-ear on my face! Mine is not the best in anything - but it expresses exactly how I feel and want my R1 to look like and perform... With respect to the MODs... I've been having a great time with making this R1 exactly what I want. I started out with looking to reduce the heat these beasts can generate. Riding a stock R1 in a place like the West coast of Central/South Florida is a real ass-burner! That's where the Redline Water wetter came from (and it had the most impact on reducing temps). I've also gutted the CAT and had the exhaust pipes Ceramic coated to help with the temps. I can happily report that I regularly see 162-163 degrees on the engine temp gauge when running, and my ass no longer burns in traffic (even in heavy rush-hour like traffic, temps have been significantly better and overall cooler). I decided to do the A&R race baffles mostly because I was doing so much to the exhaust anyway. I'm not a fan of loud, but I did like the idea of lowering the tone of the exhaust. I love the exhaust now, and only plan to try to fine tune it by restuffing it with more filler to try to reduce the dbs a bit. I also wanted to make the R1 stronger and so I also have added a K&N air filter along with a PCIII to map out the changes, along with NGK Iridium plugs. When I combined all that with a good map and some extra love in synching the TB's (which I had the recall work done on). Now I've got a really nice, smooth and strong motor (at least from my perspective). Once I finish the MODS on the engine with a set of Factory Pro stacks, I plan to have it Dyno tested and custom mapped. I put Spiegler brake lines on the front and rear, and completed the suspension setup (per the forum instructions), along with some new Pirelli's - so the ride is everything that I'd hoped. I also decided to put on a Speedo healer to correct the stock speed/ODO error (and to correct any possible future changes in final drive gearing). Rounding out the visuals, I customized the lighting using Blue LEDs which are all wired up to a switch under the left side of the tail, replaced the stock tag fender with a nice blue tidy tail FE and LED signals, the stock front signals were also replaced by Flush mounted LED signals (wired as flasher and marker lights), frame plugs, some Harri's blue YZF-R1 CF grips and CF bullet bar ends, an aluminum keyless gas cap, as well as many small to medium "sponsor" stickers (it's a bit childish - but I like that look). http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=344178&d=1217947305 http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=344179&d=1217947305 http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=344180&d=1217947305 http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=344181&d=1217947305 http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=344182&d=1217947305 http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=344184&d=1217947305 http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=344185&d=1217947305 http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=344186&d=1217947305 http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=344187&d=1217947305

Looks really good J. Clean and well kept. I like the seat cover. Where'd you get it? Also, you mentioned suspension setting per forum instructions. You got a link to that thread and did you feel a noticeable difference in the way the bike rode after setting the suspension? Thanks.

I started out just doing the comfort seat mod from the mods section of the forum. While ebay crusin, I noticed that custom seat covers were available (hadn't thought of that), so I luckily found one in a marine grade vinyl with a Carbon Fiber look for $20 (it was half price on that particular auction). So I nabbed it and although it was not easy, I worked at learning to do a seat cover and you have seen the results... All in all, the seat has about $30 in it and alot of love and work - but all worth it.

Well... I don't think "plush" is the right word - but I think the seat mod (see the sticky in the mods section) was one of the best mods I've done. Incredible difference in the ride... PS - Thanks for the flatery about the bike!

I usually don't like stickers, but I think the ones you have are very subtle and very well placed. Good job!!!

I like the bike bro and I found your post quite inspirational. I have an '04 R1 as well. Went with the K&N air filter, -2 vortex front sprocket, Renthal rear sprocket(stock teeth) and the same exhaust mod you have...I believe Vance and Hines. Not sure about the next step, because I have an '05 GSX-R 1000(best bike I ever had), that hauls significantly more than the R1. I have decided to sink a little more cash into her though (thanks to you). Maybe a quick shifter and PC3 with custom map.

Your basic R1. Just keep the K&N sticker since thats what you have on the bike the rest are unecessary. Other than that nice clean bike.

Ya... the Gixer 1K is a cool bike :secret: but I think you'll find that you haven't yet tapped the R1 - at least not without the right mods. You'll be on the right track with the PCIII and a custom map. It really makes a big difference...

Tell me a bit about your Roth bock-off plates. Damn nice plates - and great price (link here (http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=234428)). Really is more about making for additional room to change plugs, as well as remove the function of the AIS (which robs some of the air in the air box to put into the exhaust for a cleaner burn... IE - emissions stuff. I also think that in removing all that old emissions crap, it allows more air to circulate and cool down the head area (but that is just an opinion). Not hard to do either. check out the link above and/or search on block off plates. I believe there is a sticky on it as well... Jim
