Here are some pics of a 2002 R1 swingarm that I braced up Superbike style. You'll notice that the hole on the right side has been boxed in with 6061 Aluminum and a gusset has been added to the left side of the swingarm where the brace meets the main spar. I'm offering this service for $400. The swingarms will be kept the factory black color. You may specify polished or chromed at an additional cost. E-mail with questions.

Nice job, looks great, nice rims too! Check out those OZ's windchaser, nice huh? I know there not the HL02's but they are sweet. May be placing my order for the Marchesini's with Dan Kyle soon here, with tax refund coming.

Looks nice! If I was looking for something like that, I'd contact you. My GSX-R750 doesn't look powerful enough though. :D Although, do you remember a post a while back of someone who had a yellow R1 that put two "ram air" inlets in his gas tank? I thought that looked pretty sharp. Can you do that kind of thing? I'm thinking of having that done to my GSX-R. I think it would be funny to pull up to a riding spot and have all the old timers come over. Then you can have fun listening to all their opinions as to what they're for. :D

that was r1forlife that did those vents in his tank. he is the same guy who posted above.

Greg, So what can i expect the bracing to do to the handling. Exacltly how will it affect the bike. I know the swingarm wont flex as much but i thought the flex helped get the power down without spinning the rear up on corner exits? not tryin to be a smart ass. I just dont know :iamwithst

So I waited until winter and stripped it down- even the bearings, etc.. had to come out. I had it done @ Custom Powder Coating in Arlington. First color I chose was Candy Blue- perfect over polish/silver. They said it was too difficult due to bends and holes. Color is Cream Soda blue with extra fine metallic. Here is a closer pic.

Thanks for the info. That looks sharp. I'm gonna build a 2004 and I'm trying to think of what I want to coat the frame with. I think that chrome is kinda played out. My cousin did some powdercoating on his 2003 with a lot of metalflake/pearlescence in it.

If you want something different, you may want to check out the new colored chrome that some places are doing. Sportchrome offers it and calls it KandyKrome. Looks really sweet, and I'm sure not everyone has it on their bike yet. It's chrome with powder over top, and the effect is really eyecatching.

Honestly, On the street, you probably won't even notice a difference. If you're on the track with hot slicks and pushing the bike really hard, you'll appreciate the increased rigidity. The bike won't wobble as much when you're coming out of the turns hard on the gas still leaned over a bit.

superspeedemon, I didn't want to speak up because you addressed it to Greg :( But I'll offer some insight just for kix. The bracing will certainly stiffen up the swinger but not as much as one would think, afterall in stock form its pretty stout already! Tire spin will happen regardless of what type of swingarm you have so throttle control will play a bigger part with it braced most likely. BD

What they both said:fact ................................I only did mine for the looks 'cause I only run around on the street I push it hard but I would never feel the difference on the street.......but doesn't it look SWEET:boobies

Go to Psychobike.com and do a search on it. There are a couple of threads and several pictures. If that doesn't work, call or email SportChrome, Jon will probably send you over some pics.:hellobye

Greg, Is the swingarm 6061? Do you have to bake it after you do this mod? Also are you just tig'ing the 6061 stock to the sides (inside, outside, and cap on the drive side) and then grinding the welds. I noticed that the welds on the outside of the non-drive side have been 'finished' but the inside of the drive side has not, is this correct? It looks cool and I really like the idea, just trying to get some more info. Mike

Hi Mike, I'm not exactly sure what type of aluminum is used on the swingarm. It is some high quality stuff because it welds quite nicely. I am just welding 6061 to the swingarm to box in the right side and to make a boxed gusset for the left side. I did finish the welds off on the right side for a smoother look. Keep in mind that I'm not just welding in a single plate. I am actually boxing the swingarm with aluminum sheet for maximum strength and minimal weight. E-mail if you have any other questions. Gregg

Oh, do you own a Harris Swingarm? Well I had one on my 2000 R1. I'd say that the welds were the same as mine. But maybe I'm just stupid.

Dude, can you even weld aluminum??? I doubt there are many people on the forum who can weld for strength and cosmetics both. My previous employer had a machine shop in it. There was a guy there who can weld aluminum better than OEM. So yes, I have seen welds- and judging Greg's swingarm it looks damn good. The inside was left unfinished- probably to keep strength and the cosmetic purpose of smoothing the weld is not worth it since it is not seen. The outer looks almost smooth. All it would take is a little metal fill, then re-powder coat. R1forlife- your gas tank mod still gives me wood. I try to customize anything I can think of, and that is one I have yet to attempt. I thought this was forum for fellow riders who we call brothers- not a place to criticize someone's talent.
