Ok. I'm stumped. Do you need a special wrench to get in there and remove the oil filter, ET fingers, or do you have to remove the OEM headers? Any of you guys done your own oil and filter change, I'd appreciate your input.
Thanks.

BSR-1 03-07-2009, 10:39 PM haven't had my hands on an 09 but on the rest of them you can get it off OK, it's just not very easy.
can you post a pic?

hey, yeah its a bitch! but I managed to remove the stock oil filter with standard oil filter wrench, you dont have much to play with, put wrench on the filter at a slight angle and at about 11 o'clock with handle pointing towards throttle and you can only turn to about 7 o'clock < repeat a couple of time and its hand tight. easy.
anton73 03-07-2009, 11:33 PM ^^ oh yeah and you will probably burn your hand :)
xcellrtr 03-08-2009, 09:26 AM I went from the rt side of the bike to loosen and remove the filter with oil filter pliers. Then I installed a K&N oil filter so it would make it easer the next time cause they have the 17mm nut built on the end.
strat1701 03-12-2009, 06:48 AM Here's what I did on mine:
Got a filter cap to stick on top of the filter.
Got a long ass 1" crecent wrench threaded it thru the headers. Got it started and had to reposition the wrench after like a 1/8 turn. One I loosened it enough I backed it out by hand.
Then the filter cap adapter got torqued on the top which makes it utterly impossible to pull/fish the oil filter out if that filter cap is stuck on. I had to use the headers as leverage to pry it off.
Once off, oil preceeds to puke onto your headers.
Then going back on I said f that, put it on with hand tight, and I to tighten a tiny bit more, I was able to fish thru this 'robo grip' (but not a real robo grip plier thing) which grabbed it, and I had about a 1/16 of a turn ability. Tug, back out, reposition, tug another 1/16 turn, repeat till I felt it a tiny bit more snug. Put another 90 miles on it since changing the oil and I've not seen any leaks.
I wondered if the K&N filters will have the nut on the end, BUT if you have a big socket you could have clearance issues. I also hear that the akra headers if you get a full system give you about as much room if not LESS room to fish the thing out.
I finally got the sucker off from the right side of the bike via long handled oil filter pliars. There's no way that filter was on there with 12 foot pounds...Today, I'm off to the dealer to buy a new filter and filter cap wrench. After I put my Akra system on, I'll post up how accessible the oil filter is from the right side...

Qwkslvr 04-20-2009, 03:03 PM Do you have your Akrapovic system installed yet? Any comments on getting to the filter with it installed?
2009RavenR1 04-20-2009, 03:29 PM lol, so I am wrong to stab the oil filter with a awl and spin it around??? oopps.. Thats the way I do it.
AnonymousR1 04-20-2009, 03:42 PM I had to get my stock filter off with a hammer and a long screwdriver...

From lower right side of engine, use cap wrench with long ratchet...

yankin&bankin 04-20-2009, 10:10 PM Oil filter pliers were all I've ever needed...
Neither of my R1s have had enough clearance to be able to use a wrench...
Just for those who may not know - don't put the filter on with some gorilla grip - if you put it on too tight, it can spring a leak when it gets hot.
Irish01 04-21-2009, 06:10 PM After reading all of the stories from the guys who attempted it before me I used the filter cap type wrench that uses a socket. Got 2 extensions put the cap on and went straight in between the headers. Came right off, with a little force. Took the filter out through the right side. Installed new and found that a I could install the clamp for the safey wire through the left side very easily.
laubin 04-26-2009, 07:49 AM yup same here I just used the spider filter wrench instead of the cap style...

DAMN?!? maybe on a small block chevy or any filter that hangs downward that's real stubborn
not knocking your method cause I had to do that in a pinch a couple of times
back in the day
I just use filter pliers, has enough leverage and skinny enough to get er in there
bandrews 05-22-2009, 06:12 AM Dear God -- i have to do this today. Wish me luck.

Same deal here. One extra step though.
THe dipshits at the factory put the OEM filter on with such force that the filter wrench was slipping. I packed the filter wrench with some thin card stock (like an index card) and made a real tight seal on the filter when I installed it. That trick worked great and now that I have changed the filter with normal torque and no more problems.
MrQuickR1 06-29-2009, 06:03 AM Just did my 500 mile oil change, I took just the lower fairing pieces off to give me room to work. Filter cap wrench, socket extension, and it came off. Just before the filter is off the nut, I wiggled the filter cap wrench off of the filter. Only way for the filter to come out was through the side of the headers on the right side of bike. The install was reverse and torqued to spec with a couple
' "s extra. The oil drain plug was wrenched on pretty good from factory, that too was torqued back to spec, 31' "
Pretty easy to do even with the headers in the way.
Only thing that concerned me was, the filter from yamaha was a few numbers different from the original filter it came with and the dealer filter was maybe a half inch bigger as well.
No leaks, level is good so until next one, i will try a different dealer and see what they give me as I am going to find out the actual part number for the 09
sanaga 06-30-2009, 07:10 PM its a bitch to remove stock oil filter on 09, i just did it yesterday on my first oil change....took my 30 minutes to try to remove the stock...also it tightened as hell from factory....i change to k&n one, i hope it will be easy in the future...
tlsmikey 07-01-2009, 10:10 AM I believe the correct oil filter cap you need is a 34mm. I found a 35mm at the local store and it was a hair too big.
alan3374 08-31-2009, 01:33 PM I did brought one of those plastic filter cap for removal it can't be put on all the way probably due to the side of the cap is too thick. So, I end up hammer through a screwdriver in order to get it turned. I had to do it a few times before I get it loose enough.... SIGH!!!
CRIMSOMMUSTANG 08-31-2009, 02:35 PM Same Here! Hammer + screwdriver..
Bought a K&N and been soooooo much easier since then..it now takes me 45 min from the first bolt i undo till i start the bike to make sure everything is all good.
Im installing akra headers and y-pipe soon, i just hope the headers arent gonna make it even more difficult.
