PAIR Mod on the 09

I guess on Yamaha it would be called the Air Indunction Mod? Check out the pic below. I believe if I block this off somehow it is EXACTLY the same as installing the smog block off plates. Are you guys basically just ripping out the entire air induction system and throwing it in the bin? Trying to get the PC V running my bike better. Last night it was showing 20/1 AFR which apparently will blow up the engine. :hammer: The inlet is right up against the airbox lid so caps won't work. I need to get something down in the hole to block. Just wanted to double check with some guys with more knowledge than myself that I'm on the right track. Thanks http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/8041/r1airbox.jpg

Yep! As soon as I capped that hole. Everything fell into line!

Sure is easier and cheaper than block off plates. You can usually find a rubber vacuum plug that will stuff in there snugly at an auto parts store. Use a little rubber cement just to make sure it won't vibrate loose and you should be set.

If I plug this hose, do I still need to remove the Air Induction unit?

just a quick one, what does this mod do to an engine???

It does NOTHING for the engine. It's only purpose is for Dyno stuff. You can't get the AFR reading right unless you do that so dyno tuning will not work until you cap it. It affects nothing positively or negatively. The whole system is for emissions dumps extra 02 into the exhaust to burn off any extra fuel.

I have a temporary fix, but am looking for something more permanent

Would it be very complicated to remove the complete air induction unit or would there be codes that are trigerred and so on? Would the complete air induction unit removal save a lot of weight?

I used one of the rubber bushings from the factory exhaust. Trim it up with a razor and it fits nice and snug. Added a little rubber cement for piece of mind.

You can also use a motorcycle tire valve, keep the cap on and insert it upside down (The big end facing up so you can remove it if you need too) zip tie it in. I've done this mod on my 2005 and 2008 R1. With proper mapping, works wonders and the bike becomes much smoother than stock. But I do believe as it was already previously mentioned, this only works properly when the bike is mapped on the dyno.

Is it even worth completely removing the AIS system or would it be better to buy block off plates or just plug the hole. BUMP please!

how did you guys go ahead and block this off? would a simple vac cap work?

Most parts stores will have a soft rubber vacum line plug . It slips inside , a dab of silicone before insertion then wrap the excess plug down and around the lip . Use a hose clamp or fuel injection accuseal clamp . Amazing difference . No more ducking when the exhaust started rapping and the engine braking is fracking unreal .

Saves you like a pound of weight. I just used the vacuum cap because I'm lazy and the bolts that hold the reeds in place are soft like butter and about half the people strip them trying to take them off. Not like there's a lot of room to work down there and once you strip them. Good effing luck getting them out!

Thanks for the reply MuahMan. If you competely remove the system is there any error codes or anything else that cause a problem?

I capped off the same line in the pic, noticed in the very back at the bottom of the air box, theres another hose the same size coming out, can anyone tell me what this line is for? :dunno

So Guys, Now that some time has passed, how has this mod been working for you? Any Issues/Problems? I have A & R Baffles installed and get some popping and backfiring on decel, I have a PCV ordered, but I understand that it wont solve this issue. If I install the PCV will this mod stop the popping? And do I have to have a custom map before doing it? It may be a while before I can get one done. Any help is appreciated/ Thanks, Scott

The popping is great. I for one like it when my bike pops. It sounds cool.
