Gregg's Customs 03-30-2009, 11:06 AM Hey All,
So a lot of you have already contacted me regarding the '09 R1 product by Gregg's Customs. The good news is that we've already had our '09 R1 up on the lift and have gotten into the design phase for all the parts. We plan to offer:
Side-Arm single sided swingarm kits in stock size wheel as well as 240.
Billet Flushmount LED signals
Billet Mirrror Blockoffs
Adj. Billet Fender Elim.
Billet countershaft sprocket cover.
I've already got a good amount of the parts designed in CAD and we're just working to get them setup on the machine.
We are in the middle of moving into a bigger shop and we're bringing a new machine online so we are very inefficient right now.
Long story short....I was hoping to have the '09 sutf available this week but we're not quite ready yet. The swingarm kits are available for order.
The parts are sweet with the G.C. style and quality that you've all come to expect. These parts are our top priority and we'll have them available very soon.
Stay tuned. Feel free to contact me with any questions/comments. Thanks for the patience!!
Gregg's Customs 04-06-2009, 04:25 PM Mirror Blockoffs are about ready to come off the machine. I should have them available quite soon. After that I'll get the Fender Elims and Flushmounts going.

Gregg's Customs 04-07-2009, 12:10 PM whats the price on a black SSSA, stock length?
The Swingarm kit is $3500. FYI, we compared our '09 GSXR 750 kit to the stock rearend. Apples to Apples, out kit was 3 lbs lighter!! That's weighed with a P.M. Assault "race weight" rear wheel. I've got the '09 R1 arms ready to go.
JDollaz 04-08-2009, 06:56 AM Nice, cant wait to see a SS swingarm on the 09...
Any pix on any of these products yet ?
thats cleggs not greggs hahaha my bad but i still wonder if its possible to make angel eyes for these

Gregg, not to complain (too much) but if the mirror blockoffs (and anything else) are painted, you seriously need to find a vendor who can paint without orange-peeling everything to death.
redninja 04-09-2009, 09:17 PM Hello Gregg, will your weighted bar ends fit the 09R1?
Thanks in advance
Gregg's Customs 04-11-2009, 01:53 AM Our Stainless Steel bar ends will fit the '09 model. We have them in stock in Satin Black powdercoat and bare stainless. You can order at www.gcshopping.com

:iamwithst we powdercoat a bazillion parts for the automotive industry, and powdercoating does not yield the mirror like finish of liquid coating, its just the nature of it, powder is geared more for performance :secret:

There on the CNC machine now. :fact
Gregg has been in the process of moving into a new shop during the design and manufacturing process of the 09 products so it has taken a bit longer. :fact

maybe I'm picky, but I'd rather have the finish of the blockoffs match the finish of the plastics they are mounted on. There's no doubt about the benefits of powdercoating, but I'm not too sure how much performance is needed out of the mirror blockoff finish.
Just my own personal nitpick, though, the mirror blockoffs are great and I still use them, as well as the flushmounts, etc. :thumbup
sup gregg/robert! this is ryan... nice to see u back in the forum! cant wait to hear from u guys! btw, my lil man is here:) he came earlier than expected! we'll be coming 'round sometime to pay u a visit! thanks gregg:thumbup

Its extremely hard to get an accurate color match with two different paint systems especially if your dealing with a metallic liquid paint because you can't just add dye or tint, powder has to be reformulated. The other issue with powder is particulate size, resin & flow agents and getting everything to flow evenly in the cure process. Sometimes even the orientation of the part in paint & cure effects the appearance :thumbup

I realize all of that, and am not questioning the powdercoat process, nor it's finish properties, only the quality of surface finish. You work for Chrysler, right? Would Chrysler accept a solvent-based liquid paint job on the body panels and a powdercoat job on the gas door?
Bogie 04-28-2009, 03:46 PM So your not happy about the quality?? Wasn't there another thread started by a VENDOR that I was infracted and told to stop poopooing in?? Maybe you should start your own complaint thread? :sing: :sing:

Try reading. I didn't accuse the vendor of making crap, or his product performing like crap.....like somebody else.
I mentioned the surface finish to Gregg, prefaced it with "if they are painted" and he explained it. I haven't stalked the subject all over the boards to make a point of telling everybody that I think it's crap. In fact, quoting myself above, I have clearly said they are great and I use them, along with other products of theirs. Big Difference.

You say "tomato" I say "tomato" :fact
The difference is who says it. No matter how it's said. I was told to take my complaints elsewhere and not post them in their thread. :fact
blur1 04-28-2009, 03:59 PM maybe a contrasting colour/shade might work?:dunno
i put polished on my bike so i didn't have to deal with colour differences. maybe that or black could be an alternative?:dunno

That's not true. If you still have a beef over that take it to PM's and the person who gave you the infraction can explain his actions to you, or I can re-cap my comments for you.
In the mean time, my apologies to Gregg for participating in derailing his thread, I had a fair question about the paint but it went offtrack from there. PM me if you want to have all of this discussion deleted from the thread. I would go ahead and do it, but I'm not a moderator of this section.
Bogie 04-28-2009, 04:22 PM Let me put this one back on the track then:
2009 Gregg's Custom parts are in production so the wait won't be too much longer. :thumbup
I've used Gregg's product on my 06 & 07 R1 and the quality was great along with customer service. Even when my stupid arse over tightened the mirror cover screw and snapped the head Gregg quickly sent me replacements at no cost to me. :bow
rorlow 04-28-2009, 04:38 PM I realize all of that, and am not questioning the powdercoat process, nor it's finish properties, only the quality of surface finish. You work for Chrysler, right? Would Chrysler accept a solvent-based liquid paint job on the body panels and a powdercoat job on the gas door?
Actually I'm a Tier I paint applicator to Chrysler, GM, Ford and a large number of the transplants. As far as different paint systems on several components in proximity to each other, its not uncommon at all, especially on interior components. Its not uncommon to have multiple substrates like CRS, Alum, Galv & plastic thrown into the mix too. Than if your talking interior there's harmony matches with vinyl, upholstery & carpet.
Your correct, the example you used would not be spec'ed like that because of the "Class A" designation on those particular parts in conjunction with their location on the vehicle. We do "Class A" powder on interior and exterior components but they don't match good base/clear water or solvent born systems for appearance.
The problem with powder is the partical size of the pigment & binder. Even after cure the particles don't orient all the same way, so your DOI (distinctness of image) will not match a good wet application. The other factor that plays a big part is the difference in film thickness between powder & liquid systems, powder by nature is applied much thicker, which can much more easily result in orange peel or picture-framing.
We do alot of "A" & "B" pillar moldings and roof racks in high gloss powders, typically black & argent, and they really actentuate the flaws. We are actually one of a handful of companies who do "Class A" powder applications because of the FRC and the finessing involved, the rework can kill your profit margin.
Based on appearance only (even on the same substrate) powder cannot compete with a good liquid system it just doesn't have the same finish quality. That being said Gregg does a fantastic job matching the colors, and given the size of his components the film thickness is very consistent, I've never noticed heavy paint or picture framing on his parts. I'm sure the main reason Gregg went with powder on his components is durability, for the abrasion & chip resistance.
Kind of unrelated but . . . here's an interesting excersize-
next time you see a bike with the same color fairings & tank, compare both closely & tell me which part the finish looks better on, the majority of the time the same finish will look better on the aluminum tank rather than the plastic fairings.
Finish will definitely look better on the metal. Having worked for injection molders and finishers, plastic just does NOT finish as nicely as metal, and certainly can't maintain a good finish as well over time.
Mac Knificent 04-28-2009, 05:40 PM All I'm saying is these flush mount blinkers need to come out ASAP! My '09 is pretty friggen sweet, just as is everyone else?s but it's killing me looking at those gigantic road stoppers hanging off the side of my bike looking like a massively orange Ricky the Raindrop trying to drag knee.
All in good fun? Thanks Gregg?s for making a sweet product to fix my woes!

about time:crash my windflappers were getting to me...
does the satin black match the matte black on the raven?
Gregg's Customs 04-29-2009, 02:56 PM We use Black Anodize for the "Satin Black" finish. It's the same finish that we've used for all the Raven's etc. Customers have been happy with the finish.
blur1 04-29-2009, 03:04 PM who scratched the white fairing with the polished ones?:flush::lol
Gregg's Customs 05-01-2009, 12:26 AM Funny you noticed that. One of the guys had a right angle grinder disc fly off and of course the fairing was in it's path.
I've listed the signals on my site. You can pre-order now if you like. I've got a batch out to finish so they'll be shipping about the end of next week.

Off topic Gregg sorta, I tried looking up blue fairing plugs on your site for a 2002 r1.
Do you have an idea when they will be up on the site or a direct price for them?
Thanks
