Ok so I have an 09 as well and i had the dealership call Yamaha directly. Mine makes a horribly loud "clicking" noise when u start it up. Then ull hear it riding as well but it's not as loud. The dealer relalayed the message 4m Yamaha, that that noise is normal? I've had 3 yamahas before and I've never had that problem! Well they say because it has a hydrolic cam chain that it will make that noise. They said the 09 r6 does too. Well I have a couple friends with an 09 as well and I've hurd it 1ce or 2ce on there bikes. I think personaly being an automotive mechanic that the chain stretched or jumped a tooth? It definately doesn't sound "normal!" Hope this helps

I had a fault develop with the hydraulic CCT on my 07. It caused a horrible "knocking" or "clacking" on hot start up for a few seconds (only did it on hot start-up because oil was thinner). It would quit making the noise after a few seconds when pressure built up and allowed the tensioner to engage. Went to an APE manual CCT and cured the problem...but only because I was out of warranty.

My 09 R1 does this as well. I took it to the dealership and they had two techs look at it. They told me everything was running perfectly. It does not sound right to me. Glad I got the extra maintenance plan!

i noticed a light ticking in mine, but I figured it was an exhaust leak from the new graves exhaust I put on. I was actually going to make sure it was not leaking tomorrow. I had no noise from my 04

I start the bike, cold, let the bike idle and don't touch the throttle until you're in the proper temp range of 170ish. 560 hard ridden miles on mine, two oil and filter changes (yamalube) and no ticks for me. Only thing I've noticed is if (after full warm up) I go to pull the clutch lever all the way in, and I stick my ear near the right side, I hear a slight tick/clack, release the clutch lever, it stops. These are probably just the clutch plates. These things are engines with thousands of moving parts. It cracks me up how everyone always freaks out over the tinyiest of sounds they make. If something was seriously wrong, you'd know. If it's an 09, you're covered with the factory warranty no matter what. If it bothers you that much, take it in but as many have discovered who have done that, it is normal. Ride the thing, stop worrying about every tiny tick/clack/rattle an engine makes, especially during your 'break in' period.
