strat1701 04-20-2009, 07:02 AM Hi guys. This problem may have been doing it from the get-go, but I've really only noticed it the last 2 times I took my 09 out when it had about 200 miles on it. I did some searching but nothing really sounded like this clicking issue I have noticed so I would appreciate any thoughts on this.
At extremely low speeds when I'm moving the bike around the garage, at like 2mph, if I pull the front brake lever in I'll get the normal clicking noise the lever makes when it releases the light switch which is normal, but I'm also noticing and feeling what is best described as a caliper click, as if the pads are clicking to the rotors and then stopping the wheel. I'll feel a slight vibration as they 'click' on as if they are clicking against the rotor sharply. Braking performance is NOT hindered in anyway when I'm at speed, I don't feel this 'click' when I brake from speeds anywhere from 15-100mph. I peered down at the back of the calipers when I was moving the bike slowly and I can't see anything loose in there like a pin or pad loose. Has anyone else ran into this before? (I've done my best to describe it). Other usefull information:
No squealing or squeaking, mushy lever pull, shuddering coming from the brakes. Rotors are smooth no scratches, no excessive build up of brakedust. Braking performance is not hindered in anyway, the bike stops very strong with no other bad vibrations or feelings, it only seems to do this when it's being moved and then the brakes (front) applied at very low speeds. Bike has 271 miles on it, may have done it from the get-go but only really noticed it the last 2 times I took it out when the bike had about 200 miles on it.
Class discussion begin! Thanks for the input!

I'm guessing that it's the pads shifting from rear to front.:dunno There has to be some play in there to keep them floating.
My 07 will do the same thing and I believe the brake setup is identical between the years.
r1_dav3 04-20-2009, 07:52 AM are the stainless steel pad anti rattle plates which shield the top of the calipers directly above the pads in the right way around?

Thanks for the input guys. Sounds likely. It's hard to see them moving though while you're on the bike!

I haven't touched anything on the brake pads since getting the bike in Feb at the dealership. Unless it was put on wrong at the Yami factory. Would I have to pull the calipers off to see these plates? I would assume so?
StevieR1der 04-23-2009, 09:53 PM Mine do that too....I think it's not a problem though.
r1_dav3 04-23-2009, 10:33 PM ru sure its not your steering head bearings? if the are loose the whole front end will clunk somewhat when you get on the brakes, its not very good for holding a smooth line through a corner either.

Better not be the steering head bearings.:fact Bike is brand new.
Probably worth checking though. Can't ever be too sure.

steering head bearings dont have to be worn to clunk, just not adjusted correctly.
d207gp 04-24-2009, 04:39 PM One way to test for bearings is to brace the front tire against a wall and push down while holding the brakes. If you get a clunk, then those are your bearings.
strat1701 04-27-2009, 07:02 AM I think I've figured out that it is the floating pads. I think I've narrowed it down to only when I'm backing the bike up out of the garage, and I apply the brakes, I'll hear and slightly feel that little 'click' of the single pad on either side. if I roll the bike forward and apply the same pressure I don't hear or feel a click. Pad thickness are great, and if I touch the rattle plate, it moves a tiny tiny bit so I think with the rotor and wheel moving backwards and then you apply the brakes on, you'll get this little click. Otherwise you don't.
MA Mems 04-30-2009, 03:31 PM I know this is slightly off topic but my front brake makes an insanly loud hissing everytime I use it. seems to work just fine but my r6 never did it. any idea?

While riding? A high pitched hiss when you apply? That's the rotors rubbin the pads and is normal. My 09 does it, it's not a squeal just a noise I hear. Just check the pads and rotors to make sure you're not seeing a gouge develop and you're fine. On my 6r, when I switched to EBC HH pads on stock rotors mine do it, and it is common alot. The 09 may have different OEM compounds than before and I'm sure my pads with 281 miles on them are just barely bedded in.
fireblade_rr_r1 08-11-2009, 09:26 AM For the OP
It's just the pads floating / rotating on the retaining pin.
I can on my 06 press on the top and bottom of the spring plate (like if you were playing piano with your first and middle finger) and can replicate the clicking noise you described. It annoying as hell but doesn't hinder the breaking at all.
