Front sprocket

Its looking like the front sprocket (-1) off of my 06 R1 will work on my new 09, but I want to verify this before taking them both apart. I was looking on McCoy's site and it looks like 98-09 front and rear sprockets will interchange. Anyone done this yet? The 09 feels geared really really tall, so I'm hoping the -1 front helps that. Is -2 too much?

-2 is too much for the front... If you want -2.... go -1+3! also, I may be wrong but I think you need to get a 99-03 R1 front sprocket to go -1, and as far as I know the are all interchangable.

I should have specified, I have a 16 tooth aftermarket front sprocket on my 06 R1.

I wouldn't go down another tooth in front... spend the extra change and go +2 or +3 in the year.

I'll do the -1 front first and if it doesn't feel how I want it to feel, then I'd maybe do +2 in the rear. I'll report back once I do the swap.

some people say -2 in the front is bad.... causes too much turn in the chain

it will fit, i went -2, +2, but i am using my bike for the track. -2 in the front is not bad, most of the guys here race with a -2 on the front.

Well I did the swap last night. Changing the front sprocket on the 09 R1 is really easy. Took me a half hour tops, start to finish. Riding the bike around town definitely feels a lot better. You don't get near as much of the vibrating at low RPMs when taking off from a stop. It definitely feels a lot shorter geared though. On the highway at 80mph indicated, was cruising about 6000 RPMs now. I forget what it was w/ the stock sprocket. So figure thats around 72 MPH actual speed. Put 150 miles on today, and will do more soon to see if I really like it, so far so good.

I've been running a 15 on my 99 for the last 22,000 miles and it still looks great! I wouldn't worry about at all about using a 16. Mark 99 R1

You can keep the chain. With -1 (16) front, you are at 4-th marking with the rear tire. You will have enough chain to go +2 in the rear if u like to. Did it last night, go out now for a tryout :finger I hope you have your bike back now?

ok so for anyone wanting to do it.. just do it.. Its alot better. taking off is smoother. all the vibrations under 4k are about 85% gone( even though i did like it) Just get a speedohealer and youll be set. easy job to do. just get in impact! it wouldn't budge with a breaker bar or any other method. trying for about 30-45 min.. SO i just bought an impact. and came off in 5 seconds. 10-20 min job at most if u have the right tools. edit: thanks to madboosties for the help. heres a link if u need help http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=210582
