Anybody know the oil level in the 09 R1 front forks as standard? Can't find this info anywhere..
First impressions are that the air gap is larger than in the 07.

If you are going to change the oil level, do so in small increments (about 5 mm). Damping characteristics should stay similar, with more bottoming resistance. Piper 06-19-2009, 05:23 AM Thanks for the info. Is this in the service manual?
I was measuring the bike/rider sag, and the front measured like it had a larger air gap, i.e. soft initially. I think that this is the current trend.
I'm going to track the bike as normal at first to see what it feels like, then will make changes as required:thumbup DanQ 06-19-2009, 05:36 AM Thanks for the info. Is this in the service manual?

Yes, the distance is from the service manual. The sentence about making change is from what I have learned. Jengel451 06-23-2009, 09:38 AM I just sent my forks to GP Suspension in Portland, after a few days on the track, I got tired of the front end just disapearing on me. Also, by end of the second session I was bottoming out the front, even after cranking up the comp.
Either the oil is crap or the stack is crap or the whole thing is crap. After pulling them off, I was surprised at how much they stick as well.
GP will use mine as a prototype, I'll let everyone know what happens. When do you get them back? And what are they going to install? I'm curious as I've heard a lot about them not performing well, although I believe the potential is there.
I suspect it's the stack, but can't confirm until I pull a set apart. Jengel451 06-23-2009, 10:18 AM Not for a couple of weeks, Litterally just sent them off, I need them back by July8th though.
Your probably right, or the oil is foaming, which would be strange given the design. DanQ 06-23-2009, 10:31 AM Not for a couple of weeks, Litterally just sent them off, I need them back by July8th though.

My thoughts exactly on the oil. Yamaha uses a zero wt oil made for them by Ohlins. It's generally good stuff, and the design should preclude any foaming. When I get back from my track weekend in July I'm going to see if I can find some forks to pull apart and either install Ohlins or other aftermarket valving.
I'll be waiting for your review of your freshened legs :thumbup 811Racer 06-23-2009, 11:42 AM I ordered the ohlins piston kit and I am seriously hoping to get more rebound damping as I still have bounce at the top of the rebound stroke with stock valving. I have rebound 1 click from full stiff and 1.1 springs in the front. I ran 1.0 springs in my 04 R1, but the motor mounting position change and my extra 10 lbs seem to require extra spring. I also had to drop one spring rate (110 to 105) on the rear shock from my 04 as the tail end is lighter...
I've never pulled apart a big piston kit fork before so this should be fun. I ordered the damper rod/seal head tool from ohlins as I couldn't find the specs for an 09 fork damper rod extractor anywhere. I'll let everyone know how it goes soon. Cool. I was checking out the Ohlins kit because HardRacing was offering it as a great deal. I noticed the same response in rebound, but have tried not to post too much about it until I can check a couple more.
What weight oil are you planning to use with the Ohlins pistons? | |
