joey93turbo 01-30-2003, 09:27 PM I just placed my order for this suit with Kneedraggers. Call me naive, unexperienced, whatever you'd like, but I know that I have zero experience on a streetbike and I want the best gear I can get. Just so y'all know, I bought an R6, not an R1. No way in hell I'm that crazy, this is my first bike. Anyway, the suit should be here in a week or two. I noticed a lack of high-end gear on this board. Is everyone riding in their underwear? It's amazing how much the feedback on gear helps other riders. Expect a review and pictures when I get it. If anyone has any questions I'd be more than happy to answer them. I don't really know what to look for in a suit, since this is my first one, but I've heard great things about Alpinestars gear.
MikeV 01-30-2003, 09:35 PM Good choice on the suit, Alpinestars makes great stuff. And as for Kneedraggers, great choice, I bought my Spyke suit from there. Love the suit and those guys were a lot of help and gave me a great price.
As for the quality of gear on this site, it is all over the board. There are guys here with custom suits and off-the-shelf suits and guys who ride in t-shirts and shorts.
I think you did the right thing investing in protective gear (hopefully you have a good helmet, gloves, and boots as well) and I hope you never have to find out how good your suit is.
Looking forward to seeing the pics.
joey93turbo 01-30-2003, 10:00 PM Thanks Mike.
I was going to go with theridersedge.net but they never answered their phones! I tried multiple times for three days during regular business hours and couldn't get ahold of anyone. I figured they didn't want my business. Althought they quoted me a great price, I'd rather pay a little more to ensure the transaction goes smoothly. I sent an email to Todd at Kneedraggers and they quoted me like $10 more, which was well worth it.
I have a Shoei Z-II helmet that came with the bike, as well as a lower end HJC. I really lucked out because the helmet fits me perfectly.
Gloves, I'm gonna pick up a pair of Alpinestars SMX Pro's.
As for the boots, I need to go try some on. It's a toss up between the Sidi Vertebra 2 Race, Alpinestars S-MX Plus, and Alpinestars Supertech. I've heard great things about all of them so I think it's going to come down to the way they feel when I try them on.
I'm also going to order a Dainese Safety Jacket 21 to wear under my leathers. It appears nobody here has any experience with these judging from the zero responses I recieved inquiring about them in the general forum. I'll be sure to write a review on this as well.
I'm sure hoping I'm not going to regret buyin an R6 for my first bike, despite warnings from friends, family, and other riders. I think I can handle it as long as I control the throttle and keep my head about things. I've started the group buy for Intuitive sliders on here and the R6 board to cover myself if and when I drop or down the bike. I'm also going to order a steering damper when I get a chance. Riding season here in Oregon is still a few months away, so I have some time.
MikeV 01-31-2003, 10:00 AM you'll be fine. The first bike my girlfriend ever rode was my R1 (at the time only 800 miles on it). She took it easy just riding around the parking lot for a few days and did great. She still hasn't taken it out on the road (doesn't have a license) but she has fun and has a healthy respect for it.
Just remember when you are riding to stay focused and assume that the other guy does not see you (ie when you go through an intersection look both ways regardless of the color of the light).
As for the Dainese safety jacket, wait till you get your suit to make sure their is room in it before you order it.
Have fun
Top Gun 01-31-2003, 10:16 AM Alpinestars are very good, I've had a 2-peice for a couple of years now (tasty chrome lettering) and haven't looked back. I bought mine just a little on the tight side but after a couple of months of wearing it fits just fine now. Also a back protector is a damn fine investment, I have a Knox that fits nicely under my leathers and I wouldn't ride anywhere without it now.
joey93turbo 01-31-2003, 10:25 AM Thanks for the tips! I ordered my suit in size 48 knowing that I would need a little room for armor, and I'm getting big fast so I don't wanna outgrow it. The 46 was an extremely tight fit. I don't think I could ride if I was uncomfortable.
windchaser 01-31-2003, 06:27 PM I also love Alpinestar I have the P1 jacket and track pants 2 piece seem to work better for me and as far as Gloves RS-TaiChi is the best pair I have ever own, and I just got a new pair of boots also check them out.
Happy 01-31-2003, 06:31 PM hey joey
what's your height and weight
trying to get an idea of how alpinestar fits
StickySideDown 01-31-2003, 06:36 PM My 02 cents -
Get youself a pair of good boots. In the event of an undesireable get off, your ankles and feet will ALWAYS take a whack. Flashy race boots are sweet and offer the best protection but get a pair that you'll feel comfortable walking around town with or at a friends house. For comfort and protection I have a pair of Alpinestars Effex goretex boots. There sweet I have been down twice in the same pair and they are still going strong.
joey93turbo 01-31-2003, 09:09 PM Windchaser - Sweet!
Happy - I'm 6'1 200lbs (mostly in my stomach)
Sticky - Thanks for the tips!
DorshR1 02-09-2003, 07:24 PM Joey,
Great choice on the leathers! Can't say the same for Kneedraggers though. I just had a bad experience with them - they charged me a 20% restocking fee on a set of 500.00 dollar rearsets that I later found out were on backorder. They didn't even mention this to me until I waited two weeks for the UPS man to never come. So I cancelled the order and now I owe 20% of 500 dollars. Whats that about? Anyways, don't get me started enjoy the bike you will do fine, I bet you will be trading that R6 for the one next year!!! Stick with the forum there is tons of info you can learn on here.
r1dude98 02-10-2003, 08:48 PM YES..............SIDI make awesome boots, I love mine. I also think they make the best looking boot.:rock

Are you kidding me , the mojority of the guys here have some of the best gear out there :fact
Alpinestars gear is VERY, VERY good. I've owned a couple of their jackets, and several pair of Alpinestars gloves. Very comfortable, and will hold up if you ever go down.
I'm currenlty selling my Bostrom Replica, but if I wasn't getting a custom jacket, there is no way in hell I would be selling it. :no
You can view pictures of my jacket by.......Clicking Here!!!!!!!! (http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27726)
