I'm getting ready to install my Bazzaz and I figure I might as well do my smog block off's while i have the tank and airbox off. I have the blockoff's, but no cap for the airbox..Can I get something at homedepot?? What do I need to get?? Also, while sitting on the bike, is Cylinder 1 on the far left? Clutch side?

just cut something to fit the hole. Piece of rubber or plastic... then appoxy it in place.

I went to autozone and bought an assortment of vacuum bypass plugs. Found one that fit in the kit.. Cost me 2.99, and I have extra plugs. I actually have another one of the same size, so if someone needs one, let me know.

Autozone, Oreilly, get a 3/8 vacumm plug, zip tie in on. On my 06 cylinder 1 is on the clutch side, good luck with the Bazzaz just installed mine yesterday, it was fun

don't forget to plug the little hole in the bottom where the smog motor was attached to the airbox.

don't forget to plug the little hole in the bottom where the smog motor was attached to the airbox. Yeah good call I just twisted and slid the plastic ring off the smog motor that attached it to the the bottom of the airbox and plugged it back up.

Is this the spot everyone is talking about when they say the air knecks down? Looks like it would take about 30 seconds to open it up with a hacksaw. http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i163/811Racer/09_R1airbox002.jpg Any idea what this little compartment is for on top of the air box? Sees like a big waste of space. http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i163/811Racer/09_R1airbox001.jpg

Just finished installing my XT GPX and finally got all the data inputs without needing the stock display unit. Now I can really start gathering some data next weekend. http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i163/811Racer/09_R1airbox003.jpg

Glad to see you got it done, Brian.. I'm having a hell of a time getting this box back into the rubber funnels. I've been trying for at least 30 minutes now..sweating my ass off. I'm getting pissed at this mofo.. I did cut that funnel off the airbox.. I called Kyle M and he confirmed that you cut along the line on the box itself..

Ok, I'm a ****ing idiot. I was trying to put the boots on the outside of the box, not on the inside.. I tried for at least 45 minutes before realizing that. I busted my hands up, and I was ready to kill someone. Bike is almost back together..

Holy chit! thats funny. Didn't we just talk about pulling them back through the inside earlier? Well, glad you got it done.

Holy chit! thats funny. Didn't we just talk about pulling them back through the inside earlier? Well, glad you got it done. For some reason I was thinking you meant pushing the tubes out through the box and around the outside of the inlet. It was driving me ****ing nuts. But the bike is finally all back together and just took it on a test ride. The bazzaz qs is WAY smoother than the dynojet on my 03. Haven't tested the TC yet. ;)

don't forget to plug the little hole in the bottom where the smog motor was attached to the airbox. I was able to shove one of the vacuum plugs in the assortment through that hole. It ain't going anywhere. But the bike seems like it's popping more now than before. It's cool though, I like the pop... Especially when it pops with the QS. Sounds bad ass.

Just wait till you get that Z-afm and start mapping. After 3 short rides my bike is a total beast now. Front wheel is coming up with ease, never did that before, even full throttle in 1st gear. :flex:

You can also see how I tried to take apart the bike to try to access the ram air tube from the side to try to get it over that friggin box...unsuccessful.. lmao :lol

I found a really easy way to remove the side plastics and ram air intakes by only removing two bolts. I'll have to show you next time we get together.

Its not quite as easy as I make it sound, but it has sure helped me several times. The side panel has to be off, then you just unscrew two bolts and remove one pop rivet. I'll take some pics and post it up next time I put the street fairings back on, orif Nick drops by to show off his Bazzazz system. I currently have mine prepped for the track so won't be much help.

So how much does removing the Airbox restriction help?

So how much does removing the Airbox restriction help? there is nothing definitive, but the visual restriction is obvious. I think that it is designed to funnel air into that top compartment personally. Not sure what could be placed in that compartment, but mine is empty... see pic above. Nick - I'll be here on Sat.

As far as the airbox modification, I'm not really sure if there's a difference or not. My bike feels better overall, but I did the bazzaz, smog block offs, and airbox mod at the same time. I remember a member with a european r1 posted a picture of his stock airbox and it did not have that "funnel" on it. It was believed that this was another restriction that the US models had. I wonder if any UK or Canadian members are willing to open up their airbox and take a picture for us. I'm pretty sure the one that was posted before was removed.

So, here is the ram-air removal I was talking about. Again, yoiu have to remove the middle fairing, then the ram-air cover (at least the forward most bolt. Then unscrew the two screws shown here. There is also a plastic pop rivet underneath if you still have the middle underfairing in place. http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i163/811Racer/ram-airremoval003.jpg Next, just pull the entire assembly forward and up to remove the entire ram-air assembly. http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i163/811Racer/ram-airremoval005.jpg

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i163/811Racer/ram-airremoval003.jpg Rock fist! Lol Thanks for posting that, Brian. Seems easy enough. I have a local guy with a Z-afm who's going to let me borrow it tomorrow. I'll give you a call late morning, early afternoon tomorrow and see what's up.

I have an 09 R1 with PCV, I'm currently using the DynoJet map from their website as I have Two Brothers slip on exhaust and stock air filter. It does have quite a bit of popping on decel and I'd like to fix this, but will it really hurt anything? I ordered the Graves smog block offs and will put them on when I get them but I just want to make sure I'm not going to damage anything by running it like it is until I get the block offs. Does anyone have a picture of the modded airbox? I'm assuming it's very simple, just open it up, bolt on the block off plates, plug the airbox and that's it? Or am I missing something? Also, one more issue I'd like to address, between 4-5K RPM and cracked throttle while cruising, I can feel the bike loading up a lot and then once it's over 5K or go WOT, it cleans up really well. The bike pulls SO hard at WOT it's just the 4-5K RPM that is irritating. I've seen a lot of talk about the PCV and the fly-by-wire system causing these issues, I'm just looking for a resolution. I was going to get it dyno tuned but I really don't think I'm gonna see a big enough difference, at least while I'm here in Hawaii, as it's hard enough to find places to ride anyways. Maybe i'll wait and just get an Autotune kit? Thanks in advance!

I found a pretty good thread in the 04/06 forum, http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81452&page=6 Is this about the same procedure for the 09? Another question I had was that since this is burning "unburnt" fuel in the exhaust, won't blocking these destroy the catalytic converter? So if you do this mod don't you want to also install a Y-pipe?

So if you do this mod don't you want to also install a Y-pipe? Installing is kind of like the 04-06. You install the block offs from the top of the bike... lift/take off the tank.. remove the air box... take out the ram air intake... You will see the AIS.... remove the AIS and install the block offs... Replace everything. Just be patient while you do the install because it does take some time. Also, while you are doing this you can replace the plugs or air filter if you want.

Please comment on the catalytic converter if you would. That is a major concern because the honeycomb that's inside can melt together actually clogging the exhaust and possibly damaging the engine because of back pressure in some circumstances.

You do not need to remove the cat if you install block offs. You can remove the cat if you want some top end and less heat on yourself.
