The sensor is a level only sensor so you were in no danger. R1's are known for having the oil sensor set too high and coming on pre-maturely. Keep the level near the top and you should have no problems. Every bike is going to burn oil, some more than others. My 99 goes through about 8 ounces every 4000 miles. Unless you had a reference and were keeping track of the level, you have no way of knowing if you're burning excessive oil. My guess is you were a little low to start with and you have nothing to worry about.

could be an oil leak somewhere? as u rode, u leaked out oil but never notice and it eventually drained? just a possibility.

I am going with the R1 sensors being sensitive as a woman on the rag. Mine used to go off unless it was filled to the brim. Check your sight window, as long as its halfway up after you warm the bike up you are good.
