What's wrong here, driving along on highway( 09 R1), yellow light comes on, 7.3 miles later....out off gas!
Lucky for me a guy stopped to help but did'nt have any thing but an empty water bottle to put gas in.
We ended up tapping off the schrader valve on FI rail of his jeep just to get 1/2 a bottle full of gas, which was just enough to get me to the next gas station where it took 4.5 gallons to fill up.
I'm hoping something just stuck in the tank to cause a miss-reading.
I guess I'll start using the trip meter more.

Thats weird, usually when the fuel light comes on, there is a gallon left. I thought it was the same for the r1.

It could be in how hard ya runnin' the bike too and what fuel type mods ya have as well

One of my customers runs an 09 R1 and he gets the most inconsistent reserve range.

His minimum record at the moment from light on to running out is 5.4 smiles. He's had nearly 20 on the flip side of that though so now doesn't trust the light in the slightest.

I never understood how people continue to run out of gas on bikes. All you have to do is reset your trip each time you fill up and keep an eye on your mileage.

I posted up on a couple other threads along similar lines with regard to the fuel mileage, "F-stop" light, and how far can you go on a tank on a '09 R1. My personal experience is the F-stop light is hit or miss. Ran out of fuel without it coming on. Ok while that isn't true, more or less when the warning is less then 5 miles from no more cyclinders going up in down is about the same difference in my book.

I use trip one and start looking or planning my fuel stop at around a 100 miles. With the idea that I want to fuel at 115 to 120 miles. The most I think I have gotten from a tank is right at 140. Alot of highway tucked in and putting along in 6th at the "Speed Limit". You know 65MPH at like 4K revs on the motor.

YMMV

that's crazy. On my 2005 R1, when the reserve light pops on, I usually have about 30 miles or so. I forget the exact amount of fuel that is left, but I think I did the math once and it came out to around 30 miles.

I remember the first night I bought my bike; my friend drove me down past LA and it was about a 400 mile trip home (from 10:30 pm to about 5 am). Anyway, we were driving along in this really deserted part of the highway at night and suddenly the yellow light pops on. I mean, we were out in the middle of no place. I was sweating bullets riding along. To make matters worse, my friend decided this would be a good time to drive 90 to 100 MPH up and down the hills we were on. I hadn't read the manual, so I didn't know what range I had on the bike - I was just waiting for it to shut down on me and to coast to a stop in the pitch black night! :-)

When we finally hit the first town, I got the heck off the road and we found a gas station. I think the F-trip showed something like 22 or 23 miles.

These days, when that light comes on, I head straight for the gas station.

With my first Yamaha (a 1986 Fazer FZX 700), I actually ran out of gas right as I was about to turn left into a gas station. The light came on as I was heading home, but I didn't think too much about it. I went about 10 miles home. Then got up the next day to ride, and went about 10 or 12 miles into town. I was pushing the bike real hard and suddenly it lost power... that's when I realized it must not be sucking up fuel 100% of the time. So I eased back and tried to make the gas station. I was sitting in the left turn lane at the light (about to turn into the gas station) when the bike just quit and wouldn't start up again. When the light turned green, I had to push the bike through the intersection and into the gas station. That was a very close call!! :-)

With the R1, I usually figure about 20 miles is a safe range once that light pops on. These days, usually what I do is start looking for a gas station when my A-trip is showing 100 miles or close to it. That's usually pretty close to when the F-trip is gonna pop on anyway. The bike usually takes 3.75 gallons at that point (+/-). And I believe the total fuel capacity on the 2005 R1 is roughly 4.75 gallons.

On your bike, even if you are pushing it really hard, I would think you should still be able to get 20+ miles once the light goes on. How many miles are on the main A-trip when your F-trip pops up?

I've never had this problem with my 07R1, light comes and I have a good enough range to get to a gas station, same true with the other bikes I've owned.
Maybe I should disconnect the light to train myself to use the trip meter, or this first time (yes, first time) taught me a lesson.

I just never leave it to chance, i see the light i'm getting gas bottom line, i don't wanna know what my reserve milage is. To each his own but i'm not taking a chance.

That's a good policy - one which I share. That light comes on, I stop at the first gas station.

If you think the R1 light is touchy, try a Ferrari 360 some time. Whoa. The Italians obviously carry spare gas with them 24/7 because that car is not effing joking when it tells you you are low on gas. First a big warning light comes on in the center of the dash - okay fine. The manual says you have like 4 or 5 gallons left as I recall. Then next the last bar of the fuel gauge starts to blink - that means (or is supposed to mean) that you have 2.5 gallons left. At 12 to 13 MPG, that isn't far :-)

I remember once I parked my car at my ex-girlfriend's house. Only a block before, the first warning light came on (suggesting I had about 4 gallons left). Okay, I park the car, spend the night.. then come out the next morning and start the car. WTF? The last bar on the gauge was blinking - which indicates about 2 gallons left. No body stole gas from the car over night (although she did kinda live in a bad part of town). I drive to the gas station (about 10 miles away) and the car takes like 24.3 gallons! The tank is only 24.7 gallons.

Another time, I had to change the fuel sending unit on the car. It's located in the left fuel tank. So I run the car down until the bar starts blinking.. then take everything part and replace the fuel sending unit. During the install, I look down and there is about 1.5 inches of fuel in the tank!

Nothing against Ferrari.. they are great/amazing cars.. but be glad your R1 is made by people from Japan who love Pianos ;-)

360 is an amazing car, but do not take its warnings about low fuel casually!! :-) Motor has a very long power band (revs for days and pulls hard clear to redline). It feels just like an R1 in a lot of ways (as far as the motor I mean) - which is why I bought the R1 over the Ducati :-)

I wonder if this might be some sort of issue (i.e. recall in the future) on the '09 R1's?

The fuel light is suppose to come on when you have around .8 gallons on the 02-08 models. Maybe they changed it on the newer one or your fuel gauge is flawed. ? I have consistantly run around 30 miles after the light came on, on all the R1's I've owned. Has there been other cases of this with the new R1?

Yeah, .80 sounds familiar. I think that's how I arrived at about 20 or 30 miles for the range once the F-trip goes on.

Soooooooooo sweet! My favorite F-car next to the F-50. That FedEx pic is so sad though! Sorry you had to part with her. The R1 is looking good though!

Yeah, I was kinda sad to see her go all right. Great car, but the bottom line was that when I had free time to joy ride the decision was between the 360 and the R1 - and the R1 always won :-) The 360 ended up sitting undriven for maybe 3 or 4 months. I finally decided to sell it and make room in the garage for my SUV.

I have to say, however, when I took the guy who purchased it for a test drive (after not driving it for several months), I almost changed my mind about selling. The buyer flew in from the east coast just to see the car. I took him for a ride and had forgotten how great it sounded (I put an exhaust on along with hyper flow cats on it). When we were driving, he commented on how amazing it sounded. I told him "if you don't buy it, I think I'm just gonna keep it" - with that, he whipped out a check from his pocket and said "Don't worry, I'm buying it!" :-)

I was kinda worried he was gonna try to low ball me, but when he said that, I figured he was serious (I didn't know he had brought a check with him). Anyway, I ended up discounting the price a little bit for him (to help offset some of the service needed on the car). He's since put a lot of money into the car and really take great care of it.

Anyway, yeah, it was an amazing car for sure. But at the end of the day, especially once you get over the "wow, it's a Ferrari", no car can compare to the fun you can have on two wheels (as I'm sure you know first hand! :-)

So true. When I lived in AZ my business partner's father (and owner of the company) had a 360 and a GT2. Amazing cars, and as about as close as you'll get to feeling connected to a machine...with the exception of a motorcycle. I still found myself having more fun on two wheels than on 4. It's absolutely ridiculous how much attention you get from the ladies though in those things. It's almost worth having one for the sole purpose of instantly weeding out the ones only after your wallet.
