: Did First Oil Change... Good News and Bad News

Today I changed the oil for the first time at 610 miles, mods are in sig. I was very happy to get the break-in oil out of the bike, that stuff looked NASTY. I went with Yamalube SAE 10W-40, a gallon filled up the motor perfectly. For the filter I used a NAPA "gold" filter which I use on all of my bikes/cars.

Good news:
- The clutch it MUCH smoother. It doesn't jerk around while engaging anymore.
- The motor runs a lot smoother, sounds better.
- More power! (per the 2nd gear wheelie test)

Bad news:
- There is now a ticking noise coming from the right side of the motor around the upper cylinder/head area. I can only hear it at idle. The ticking seems almost random, but does speed up with RPM. Is this the CCT that so many others have had ticking noises with? Mine doesn't tick on first startup (although I've only started it once since the oil change). The ticking happens when the engine is at running temp.

Anyone else have this problem?

There is a "known" prob with the 09 cam chain clainkn around at start up. Mine did it with 1500miles,,,still does it with 5700 miles on her. ,,,,my dealer told me it was not an issue? IMO it will be a recall? I did see a thread that if you do have the cct replaced it's a different part#,,,,sooooo:dundun: I know, yours sounds slightly different, but I would think related????

Is it a known "problem" or just a characteristic of the motor?

...my bad, not problem, but definitely a very common noise. No engine failures that I know of. Most 'click' only at start up, last bout 1-2 secs, and go away quickly. You were saying your sled makes a noise that matches RPM revs right? That isn't right,,,I haven't seen any post with that issue, that I know of....

It sounds perfect on first start-up, but once it warms up, there is an almost random (but RPM dependent) clicking noise around the CCT area on the right side of the motor. It's not loud or violent by any means, but I can hear it while sitting on the bike and it bothers me. I'm thinking they used a 50W oil for break-in, and the thinner oil I put in revealed a few more noises. I might take it to the dealer sometime and have them listen to it.

...probably wouldn't hurt. Then the dealer can log the complaint, if something were to happen later. That's what mine told me....which I thought was weak. "Yeah if your engine blows it was previously documented"....they left off the "....when you're on the track doing buck50!!!"

The oil used for break-in is factory filled in Japan 10W-40 yamalube. Unless you did something really stupid during the oil change it is the same bike now as it was before. Don't be so paraniod, ride it and enjoy it.

There is no method for a dealership to "log a complaint". If it is broke and warranty covers it there is a record. If it is not broke, no record. Why would they keep track of several thousand "ithinkthissoundsfunny..." You have a warranty for a reason, if you are unsure Yamaha offers extended warranty coverage - Y.E.S.

The CCT will only make noise at idle and there is not an updated part: 09-10 is the same.

Who did your AIS delete? A leak here can cause a ticking noise.

...it's what my dealer told me. That if there was an issue down the road, they had record of it. :sing:I'm not worried tho,,,you ever stand next to a Kawasaki while running? Sound like they are fixing to fall apart,,,lots of valve/topend noise.

I did the AIS delete. I did it ~300 miles before the oil change with absolutely no noises afterward. Changed the oil at 610 miles, first ride and there's new, very discernible clicking noise that wasn't there before.

+1 on the kawasaki comment, every kawi iv ever had sounded like i threw a handful of pocket change in the motor but those babies always ran and ran good. i must have bad luck because every single new or used bike iv owned has had some sort of engine noise. i honestly think in the race to keep things light weight your going to hear noises, the engine cases you know are as thin as can be letting all those high speed moving parts be heard.

Yeah my Kwack ran very loud, but always pulled like a train and never had ANY mechanical issues, possibly run solid lifters or heavy mechanicals on the top end?
Havent heard many problems with the 09 motors on this side of the pool, touch wood and hope its the same with you guys

Yeah rode the first gen ZX9, man that thing was a beast! But back to the Yam, I love this *%!@ bike! The only negative release seems to be from the American reviews,,,the guys across the pond give the R1 top slot even against the new Aprilia. I HAD to forward a review to my friends at AF1 Racing (Aprilia guys), they had rated the R1 tops and I wanted to rub it in. I think that in stock trim the R1 is definitely the underdog. But on the backside of that, this bike responds to mods the best. After I put my exhaust on and put a half ass map on it that was huge,,,,when I get my wheels that will be huge. The CBR wheels are as light as they get for OEM,,,but the R1 hoops are anchors. :riding cheers

Glad we get the euro spec in OZ, ive only had mine a week and i adore the thing, even the looks are starting to really grow on me
there was an article for sports bike sales which encompassed everything classified as sport regardless of capacity, 2009 R1 sold double the next bike listed (think it was a triumph 675 street) and TRIPLE any other litre bike, very popular here!

I love the Euro version myself. I'm actually getting the local bike guy to make me a decal kit to look similar. (CMRA race buddy that paints all the local bikes) No charge so if I *&#* it up I can just get another...
