: to 'Y' Pipe or not

Hello

I am thinking of buying a 09 R1 and was curious as to weather a 'Y' pipe is necessary or not and what is the benefit in putting one on with the slipons. I know its gets rid of the cat converter and looks better but is there any other benefit like more horespower or a better sound etc

There would certainly be a power improvement. It will also be a little bit louder since the cat is almost a muffler itself. The best improvement, at least for me, was that it removed about 80% of the heat around my legs. I don't even run the cat heat shield anymore with the Leo Vince y-pipe. Also the engine seems to run a bit cooler. Worth every penny IMO.

it appears i cant afford to get the power commander at the moment.... so if i am running the 'Y' pipe and slipons with a high flow filter will it affect (worsen) the bikes standard performance?

your bike will run too lean. hold off on installing everything until you can get the power commander

There certainly isn't much of a power improvement with the y-pipe. At least on the older bikes. The cat's are very free-flowing on these bikes. The only real benefit to a y-pipe is that it shaves another lb or 2 off the exhaust.

I'm waiting on the money to get he PCV myself and will have a custom tune also. But with x-mas around the corner may have to wait a little bit but I'll get there.

Check out Leo Vince, it's cheap and fits very well.

i've got the leovince on mine. It does make the bike run a bit lean, but it doesn't seem to really help the underseat heat problem. I'm really tempted to just put the cat back on. The only upside i can see is reduced weight since the cat is fairly heavy.

Is it possible to run an aftermarket Y-pipe with the stock mufflers? Would this even make a difference or is it pointless? Thanks

There is no difference in power! It's a weight, simplicity, and sound thing.

I went with the GYTR high flow air filter and MJS gutted stock Y pipe. No slip-ons (stock cans).

I notice a slight power improvement/smoothness and maybe a little more grumble from the exhaust...that's it. I always run mode A.

It does not run lean. The exhaust still generates some heat. I have no plans to ever add a Power Commander or aftermarket pipes. It's just perfect as-is.

I personally do not like the looks of any of the slip-ons currently available (over stock) enough to drop a grand on it. I also don't need to make a bunch of noise (been there, done that) anymore. If I had to pick one just for looks, it would be the Two Bros, but I really don't care for any of them.

i was toying with the leovince y pipe with my aka end cans, however i dont really want to laying out on a power commander etc, it sounds like the gains are very little & costs are high.

how do you know it doesn't run lean?

Well...(a) it runs a bit better than before; (b) exhaust tips are not white or flakey; (c) pulls like a mofo; (d) it just feels right :)

Nothing about it indicates any problems or issues. It could be a little lean, but the ECU and FI should compensate/auto adjust for any small changes.

I knew I did not want to change exhaust or add a power commander (what for?), so I just looked at helping it get a little better air (changed filter) and a little less exhaust restriction (gutted cat)...small changes that just help it to run better. I don't race so I'm not looking for big HP gains...just letting the engine breath a little better...and I went down a tooth on the countershaft.

Runs like a freakin' raped ape!

Do you need a PC5 with slipons and ypipe, considering it has a stock 02 sensor ??

Why is it that everybody says the bike will run lean when you install a Y pipe or slip-ons or both?
Have a look at all the PCV or Bazzaz maps, they take a large percentage of fuel OUT once tuned.
A Y pipe does NOT make your bike run lean...

It's been a while, if I remember the shielding bolts to the Y pipe or the rear set?? You can see it once you start pulling the Y pipe off.

Got it sorted just had to undo the x clamp on the muffler and twist the tube, weird design. Not running any shields and can only just feel some heat on left side.
